Cocoafair have 14 vegan-friendly chocolate slabs in their range! So many options to choose from so I ended up choosing the dark chocolate with hazelnuts and the dark chocolate with mint.

About Cocoafiar

Cocoafair are micro-batch chocolate makers that aim to buy organic whenever possible. The cacao beans are bought from small scale farmers in Panama, and their chocolate products are made in Cape Town, where they employ previously unemployed people.

Besides their chocolate bars, Cocoafair also sell vegan-friendly bulk dark chocolate, chocolate drops, chocolate coated nuts, and more!

The ingredients & The packaging

71% Dark Chocolate with Mint – Cocoa Mass, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Mint Extract. 95% Dark Chocolate with Hazelnuts – Cocoa Mass, Hazelnuts (10%), Cocoa Butter, Sugar

Cocoafair are very conscious of the impact their product and the packaging has on the environment. Printing on the packaging is done using plant-based inks, and they are working to have all their packaging be home compost-able!

Where to buy?

I bought these at Organic Zone in Lakeside and paid R50 a slab. That’s a pretty good price for vegan chocolate! These are also available on the Cocoafair online shop.

Amma’s Creamery is a new small business that makes vegan butter with cashews and coconut oil that is packaged in paper!

It really is a creamy butter that can be enjoyed on a slice of fresh bread and can be used in baking and cooking! It’s palm oil and plastic packaging free!

Ingredients

It’s a creamy 225g block of cashew butter that is suitable for home freezing. It’s made with cashew nuts, live vegan cultures, coconut oil, sunflower oil, soy lecithin, and salt.

Where to buy?

It’s for sale in Cape Town and Johannesburg. DM them on the gram for orders and more info. You can also buy their butter online and in-store at The Kind Kitchen.

If you are looking for non-alcoholic vegan wine, then Lautus has a range of de-alcoholised vegan wines you must try!

What is de-alcoholised wine?

De-alcoholised basically means that the wine is made as per normal, and that at the end of the process, they remove the alcohol from the wine. Lautus was the first to launch de-alcoholised wine in South Africa, and have been making their wines since 2017. Lautus sell 4 types of de-alcoholised wines, namely, Savvy White, Savvy Red, Rosé, and Sparkling.

I’m not a big wine drinker or a wine connoisseur, but for me these are wonderful!!! And it’s a bonus that I can have as much as I want without having to worry about getting drunk.

Isn’t all wine vegan?

Many people assume (I did once too) that all wine is vegan as it is made from grapes. What people don’t know is that many wineries still use animal ingredients (casein, egg whites, gelatin, fish bladder protein, etc.) during the winemaking process, in order to make the wine clear and bright. Luckily for us Vegans, there are wineries like Lautus, which have moved to vegan-friendly alternatives instead, which do not alter the taste of the wine.

I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.

For our wedding in September 2020, we bought Lautus wine from their online shop, but you can also buy Lautus wine from Yuppichef and Woolworths.

vegan peanut butter cookies recipe

I’ve been making vegan peanut butter cookies for my fiancée Grant. He doesn’t eat peanut butter but he loves peanut butter cookies! 💚

They are easy to make and are ready to eat in less than half an hour, from when you start making them. That is if you don’t wait for them to cool down first as he does 😋

Irene’s vegan butter (Medium Fat Spread) ^

Irene’s vegan butter is a healthy alternative to other margarine and butter on the market and can be used for spreading, frying, and baking.

Irene’s vegan butter is unlike no other

Most of the ‘margarine’ on the market are not vegan, and if they are, they either contain palm oil or are made or owned by large companies I don’t personally support as their food products are tested on animals where (e.g. china) required by law.

Now imagine my joy when I discovered a locally made creamy vegan butter made by a 100% plant-based company that is palm oil-free! Irene’s Gourmet Medium Fat Spread is an amazing vegan butter, that I highly recommend.

The ingredients:

Coconut oil, cold-pressed sunflower oil, cold-pressed avocado oil, cold-pressed olive oil, soya lecithin, water, rice, amaranth, millet, salt, herb extract, acidity regulator (Natamycin). Allergens: Soy (from lecithin)

If you love rusks then I highly recommend trying these 3 seeds rusks from VegaNix.

about VegaNix

VegaNix is a small Cape Town-based vegan bakery that makes delicious granola, cookies, brownies, rusks, and more. They also bake and sell vegan cakes for special events, and you can custom order items from them as well. All their packaging is plastic-free!

The ingredients and the packaging

It’s gluten and refined sugar-free and made with rolled oats, rice flour, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin & flax), dates, almonds, soya milk, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, peanut butter, baking soda, maple syrup, and spices. It is sustainably packaged in 100% biodegradable bags made from plants that can be composted!

As a conscious consumer, the packaging is just as important as what’s inside the packaging! I have a routine at home, where I split different materials of packaging and add the individual items that can be recycled to my recycling! And what can’t be recycled (which is so little because I’m more and more conscious of what I buy! For this packaging, the paper label went in the paper section of our home recycling centre, the staple was thrown into a tin can (in the aluminium section) and the bioplastic bag, goes into a bokashi bin.

reusable pantyliner from My own Cup^

I use to generate quite a lot of waste at THAT time of the month. I’m now so proud to be able to have a zero-waste period every month.

Why make the switch to a reusable pantyliner?

Between a women’s first period and her last, which is estimated to be about 40 years, she will use between 5 and 15 000 single-use sanitary products, if she is in the privileged position to have access to them and can afford to use them.

It’s been 20 years since my first period, and for 19 of those years, I think I used about 3000 single-use tampons, which all ended up in a landfill and is still there. For about 8 years I used organic cotton tampons as they were the most environmentally friendly option I knew of at the time.

Last year I made the switch to a reusable menstrual cup, which means I’m able to prevent another 3000 tampons ending up in a landfill. Have a look at my post about it here.

Reusable Pantyliner

If you don’t use tampons and use pads, there are reusable pads and panty liners available if you want to make the switch!

This is My Own Cup’s reusable, machine washable, panty liner! It’s made with absorbent cotton and printed with non-toxic ink. It has a cute cactus print on one side and is black on the other! I’ve tested it out and it’s so comfortable that I forget I was wearing it! As someone who uses a reusable menstrual cup, the pantyliner is perfect for the days at the end of my menstrual cycle when I have light spotting and don’t want to use the cup.

natural dishwasher tablets from leaf jou

For a long time, I have been looking for natural dishwashing tablets that are free from plastic packaging! I was so happy to find these natural Dishwasher Tablets from Leaf Jou that I bought 6 boxes!

Why go natural

One big reason why I insist on using natural ingredients for, not only my own personal care products but also my home cleaning products, is that there are many synthetic chemicals in products sold in grocery stores that cause serious environmental damage to our waterways when it runs down the drain! They can cause damage to the water itself, the plants and animals living in and around that water as well as cause damage to us.

The product and the packaging

Leaf Jou is a local small business that hand makes these dishwasher tablets using 5 natural ingredients: Sodium Carbonate (Washing Soda), Sodium Chloride (Salt), Aqua, Cymbopogon Citratus (Lemongrass Essential Oil), and Citric Acid.

They are then packaged in paper packaging and placed in a compostable container that is made from sugarcane pulp! I eco-bricked the sticker, but will reuse the packaging for gifting purposes!

Thank You Native decor for this beautiful cork round clock! I love cork so much that I have quite a few items made from cork, including a lamp, handbag, planter, sneakers and now this beautiful clock!

Vusani Ravele started Native Decor in his living room in 2015 and in 2016 he went on Mnet’s Shark Tank and got Gil Oved of The Creative Counsel to become a business partner. Native Decor make a wide range of lasercut home decor, furniture and corporate gifting. The cork round clock is made with cork and back with birch plywood. It measures 28cm in diameter and is 12mm deep.
