To be honest, even though the alcohol ban has been lifted I’m still enjoying drinking non-alcoholic wines like this vegan-friendly absolute zero nectar from Van Loveren.

I truly enjoy the taste of this wine, I love the bubbles, and the fact that it feels like I’m having a celebratory drink. I can drink this vegan-friendly wine anywhere (at a friends place or on the beach) and I can have a glass or two or three without having to worry about drinking too much.

Isn’t all wine vegan?

Many people assume (I did once too) that all wine is vegan as it is made from grapes. What people don’t know is that many wineries still use animal ingredients (casein, egg whites, gelatin, fish bladder protein, etc.) during the winemaking process, in order to make the wine clear and bright. Luckily for us Vegans, there are wineries like Van Loveren, which use vegan-friendly alternatives instead, which do not alter the taste of the wine.

Absolute Zero Nectar

Van Loveren has been making wine since 1937. Absolute Zero Nectar is a de-alcoholised 100% Sauvignon Blanc sweet sparkling wine that is vegan friendly, low in kilojoules and calories, and has 0,0% alcohol.

Nutritional information (per 100 ml): Energy 58 kJ Carbs 3.2 g Total sugar 3.2 g

Absolute Zero Nectar is sold in a 750ml recyclable clear glass bottle with a compostable cork lid that is sealed with recyclable foil. If you like the Absolute Zero Nectar, you should also try the Absolute Zero (green bottle)

If you are looking for non-alcoholic vegan wine, then Lautus has a range of de-alcoholised vegan wines you must try!

What is de-alcoholised wine?

De-alcoholised basically means that the wine is made as per normal, and that at the end of the process, they remove the alcohol from the wine. Lautus was the first to launch de-alcoholised wine in South Africa, and have been making their wines since 2017. Lautus sell 4 types of de-alcoholised wines, namely, Savvy White, Savvy Red, Rosé, and Sparkling.

I’m not a big wine drinker or a wine connoisseur, but for me these are wonderful!!!  And it’s a bonus that I can have as much as I want without having to worry about getting drunk.

Spier is on a mission to make all their wines Vegan and they are the first winery in the world to receive the Control Union Vegan Standard certification. So far, four of their six ranges (Seaward, Creative Block, 21 Gables, and Frans K Smit) are certified Vegan.

Spier vegan wine

Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest winefarms, with a focus on sustainable farming practices. The Spier farm is organically certified, as the fruit, vegetables and vines on the farm are all grown free from artificial fertiliser or pesticides. Spier also recycles their black- and grey-water, and 98% of their solid waste is recycled.

Veganism is a lifestyle motivated by one or more of the following reasons: health, environment (carbon footprint reduction), and ethics (preventing animal exploitation and suffering). When you consider Spier’s current practices, moving to vegan wines is a natural progression. And Spier wanted their customers to be assured that the wine really is vegan, by getting a Vegan Standard certification from the Control Union.

The Control Union is an international certification and inspection company.  It has certified the Spier Vegan Wine, since the Control Union has inspected the wine making process from beginning to end, and their certification assures me that no animal products were used during the making of the wine!

To celebrate their recent Vegan Certification, Spier sent me a bottle of their Vegan 2019 Seaward Chardonnay and a bottle of their Vegan 2019 Creative Block 2 which is a 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Sémillon.

You can buy Spier wine at most liquor stores, as well as at the Spier Winery in Stellenbosch, and on their website, where you can get 15% off if you join their wineclub. I’m planning on going for a wine tasting at the Spier Winery soon, so that I  can try the rest of the vegan wines!
