The Vegan Friendly Fort Food Truck Market

by Sharné

There is a new food truck market at Fort Wynyard in Green Point and I was invited to check out their vegan options.

Fort Wynyard

Fort Wynyard, headquarters of the Cape Garrison Artillery, is located between the Green Point Stadium and the V&A Waterfront. Every Friday night the Fort transforms as food trucks, food stalls, tables and chairs, a drinks tent, and a stage is set up, transforming the somber, military, national monument, into a fun and exciting Friday night spot.

Entry to the Fort food truck market is Free, and I love that they are located in an interesting spot that I am sure most people, like me, don’t know anything about. I actually thought I was in the wrong spot when I first entered Fort Wynyard, but after asking the gate guard, I was directed to the parking area and told in which direction to walk to get to the food truck market.

A short walk from the parking lot and I was transported to a space filled with Live music, which housed a wide range of food and drink selections and even included some stalls selling local crafts. I was invited to attend by the market creators and was pleasantly surprised by the vegan options.  I love that there are a few vegan options, as I typically return to markets that have a selection of options for vegans so that I have the opportunity to try something new every time I go.

Vegan Options

I walked around, asked some questions, looked out for vegan options, and found some vegan falafels, vegan pizza (can be made with vegan cheese) and bought some Zooka Kombucha. Have you tried their Kombucha, it is amazing! I also spotted some amazing local handmade shweshwe fabric soft toys from Everything CPT.

After doing the rounds and checking out the vegan options, I actually ended up eating at the first stall where I found Vegan food. The Sunshine Food Sprouting Co. is an all vegan stall, where I had an amazing wrap and juice, and chatted to the owner, Elisha Madzivadondo. You might have spotted his stall at one of the many markets they trade at. Elisha has opened a ‘The Sunshine Food Sprouting Co’ Cafe in Sea Point, which I have been dying to visit for a while now. I am hoping to, this holiday. If you have been, please let me know.

In the centre of the Fort food truck market, there is a grouping of tables and chairs and we sat down to have our meal, and take in the vibe. It was great to see lots of people enjoying their meals, chatting, listening to music, playing beer pong, and generally just having a good time. The next time I am there I will definitely try a vegan pizza with vegan cheese from Tru Pizza.
