C’dea is a local small business that makes 4 amazing vegan chocolate spread flavours: mandarin, hazelnut, mint, and coconut. Iv’e tried them all and have to say that the coconut flavoured one is my favourite!

About C’dea

C’dea was created by Celina and my father Rudolf because Celina had a vegan roommate and wanted to create a chocolate spread that they could enjoy together.

The ingredients & the packaging:

All four of the C’dea chocolate spreads are preservative-free, gluten-free, soy-free, palm oil-free and 100% vegan. The coconut flavour chocolate spread is made with Golden Syrup, Water, Glucose, Coconut Fat, Cocoa Powder, Fructose, Sunflower Lecithin, Coconut and Vanilla Flavouring. The packaging is a reusable glass jar with a removable sticker, which I eco-brick once the jar is empty. In our house, we reuse glass jars in the kitchen, bathroom, garage and craft room.

Vegan pesto range from Food Lover’s Market *

Food Lover’s Market have an affordable range of vegan friendly pesto’s that you have to try! I love pesto, and I often eat it as is, mixed with some pasta; or I add it some coconut milk to make creamier. I often add pesto on a sandwhich, or burger, and I love it with a salad or as a dipping sauce for veg.

The ingredients & the packaging

The pesto range is made by Real Food Factory for Food Lover’s Market. All the ingredients, except for the hemp seeds, are sourced from local farms. There is 4 types of pesto in this range, 3 of which are in this post, including a Basil Pesto.

Sundried tomato pesto: Sundried tomato (35%), Mixed seed oil (Sunflower and/or Canola seed and Olive fruit), Olive fruit, Ground pecan nuts (Tree nuts), Shitake mushrooms, Basil, Garlic, Rosemary, White Pepper, Salt.

Coriander & Hemp Seed Pesto: Coriander (41%) Mixed seed oil (Sunflower and/or Canola seed and Olive fruit), Macadamia nuts (Tree nuts), Salt, Garlic, Hemp seeds (1%) White pepper

Rocket & Hemp Seed Pesto: Rocket (41%), Mixed seed oil (Sunflower and/or Canola seed and Olive fruit), Macadamia nuts (Tree nuts), Salt, Garlic, Hemp seeds (1%) White

The Food Lover’s Market pesto range is packaged in glass jars with an aluminium lid. They are fantastic to reuse as spice containers. I have quite a few of this shape of jar, which when cleaned I take to Food Lover’s Market to fill with packaging free spices and herbs from their bulk bin section.

You can find this range in the fridge section at Food Lover’s Market. If you can’t find it, be sure to ask for some help in store. When you head to Food Lover’s Market on your next shopping trip, please remember to take along your reusable bags.

Vanilla Custard from Phat Fox

I just discovered the NEW Phat Fox Vanilla Custard and I am in heaven!

about Phat Fox

Phat Fox is on a wonderful mission to create delicious desserts for everyone to enjoy! They are well known for their dairy-free coconut based ice creams and chocolate mousse. Earlier this year they released a dairy-free yoghurt and in September they released a dairy-free vanilla custard you have to try! I won’t be surprised if you eat it straight out the tub.

the ingredients & the packaging

All Phat Fox products are free from preservatives and artificial flavours. The vanilla custard is made with coconut milk, erythritol, tapioca, caramel & vanilla flavour and colouring.

The tubs are PP5 plastic (POLYPROPYLENE) which according to Tree Revolution is commonly recycled into pegs, bins, pipes, pallet sheets, oil funnels, car battery cases, and trays. I don’t buy plastic packaged products as often as I used to, so when I do, I try to come up with a way to reuse the packaging, instead of just putting it in the recycling bin.

Phat Fox, please consider moving to glass packaging for your custard and paper tubs for your ice cream.

I’m so glad to have discovered these 3 flavours of certified organic locally produced kombucha, made with rooibos, by an environmentally conscious, ethical, Cape Town-based company called BREW.

about BREW

BREW is a female-owned business, founded by model and entrepreneur Alex Glenday. Brew cares about the environment and is involved with various environmental protection organisations in South Africa such as surfpop, the beach co-op, greenpop etc.

The brewery has been built over one of the spring water aquifers in Cape Town that is sourced from Table Mountain. BREW reuses over 90% of their processing water and the rest is used to water the employee vegetable garden. Of the little waste that they produce, they compost, recycle, and reuse 98%.

Kombucha is a sparkling drink made from fermented tea, and the tradition of making Kombucha is over 2000 years old. BREW Kombucha have 3 unique flavours of Kombucha: Original Rooibos, Buchu Babe & African Rose.

The BREW Kombucha ingredients are certified organic and contain no pesticides. At the moment they source the organic ingredients locally and abroad, with the goal of ultimately sourcing more ingredients locally. BREW kombucha is made with cut-green certified organic sugarcane & natural Cape spring water and is brewed using antioxidant-rich rooibos tea. BREW Kombucha contains naturally occurring probiotics, vitamin C, and 233% of your daily required intake of vitamin B12.

The Kombucha is bottled in a reusable and recyclable glass bottle that is made with 40% recycled glass.

I bought these at Organic Zone shop in Lakeside, but you can also buy directly from the BREW online shop, from the BREW shop in Newlands (bring your own bottle) or from any one of their stockists.

Fauxmage has recently released a creamy dairy-free butter that you have to try! It’s so creamy and tastes great!

Fauxmage is an ethical, plant-based brand that makes a variety of gourmet vegan cheeses from fermented cashew nuts. They believe in supporting local and have a factory in Stanford, a small village in the Overberg (Western Cape). Fauxmage doesn’t use artificial flavourants or preservatives but rather use fermentation (a natural process) to keep their products fresh. They use active probiotics to mature the cheese and make it more flavourful. Earlier this year they created this amazing dairy-free butter, and I’m so glad they did.

This dairy-free butter is made with cultured cashew cream and extra virgin olive oil and is packaged in paper!

I’ve been using this Back 2 Nature witch hazel and rose water toner as makeup remover together with reusable face scrubbies and I wish I had discovered it sooner.

Back 2 Nature is a local company that cares about creating products that are better for you and the environment! All their products are vegan and made with natural ingredients (mostly organic). B2N products are certified Cruelty Free by Beauty Without Cruelty as well as The South African Vegan Society.

B2N has various collections in their range: face care, hair care, skincare, and sun care. I love using this toner, it smells lovely, removes my make up effortlessly and doesn’t leave my face feeling sticky. I’m also currently using the Back 2 Nature Face Wash (have a look here) and the mineral sun shield (have a look here)

Bea Johnson’s book Zero Waste Home is a practical guide to zero waste, based on Bea’s personal experience living a zero-waste life with her family. Bae wrote this book so she could share what she has learned with the hopes of inspiring others to start their own zero waste journey.

About the Zero-Waste Lifestyle

Zero Waste is all about reducing the amount of waste you are responsible for, reusing wherever possible, and only using recycling and eco-bricking as a last resort.

Bea Johnson is known as the founder of the Zero Waste Lifestyle Movement. But just like most other zero wasters, Bea started out her life with “shelves full of things you only use once and then throw away.”

About the author

Bae and her family used to live in a big house filled with all of their stuff. They decided to make a change, and move to a neighborhood where they could live within walking distance of their kid’s school, cafes, libraries, and hiking trails. While looking for their new home, they stayed in an apartment, with just the basics.

Temporarily living with less, made them realise that they had more time to spend together as a family and do things that they enjoyed. And they realised that they didn’t miss their stuff. The neighborhood they moved to was more expensive than where they had lived before so when they bought a new home which was half the size of their previous one, they had to purge 80% of their stuff.

Their new simplified life allowed them more time, which they used to read books and watch documentaries about environmental issues. Until that point, they had been disconnected from the negative impact their actions had on the already endangered planet, which their children will inherit. For the sake of their children’s future, they drastically changed their consumption habits and lifestyle. Where better to start making changes than at home.

With the new-found knowledge that plastics were devastating our oceans, they realised that recycling was not the answer, and so they went on a journey to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. They drastically reduced their waste, which used to consist of mainly single-use packaging, bought packaging-free, and switched to reusables.

Their new lifestyle evolved and soon Bea, Scott, and their two boys Max & Léo were living a life with the goal of striving to live Zero Waste. In 2009 Bae’s husband Scott, quit his job and started a sustainability consulting company, while Bae started a blog called Zero Waste Home, where she shared various aspects of their zero-waste lifestyle. In 2013 Bae published Zero Waste Home: The Ultimate Guide to Simplifying Your Life by Reducing Your Waste

About the book

The goal of Zero Waste Home is not for everyone one who reads it to generate zero waste, which we know is not possible. Bae hopes that people who have read her book will come to realise the harmful effects our purchasing power can have on our endangered planet. The book is a step by step guide, packed full of practical tools and tips that will hopefully inspire people to reduce their waste and make other positive changes to their lifestyles that will be better for the planet and for us.

Happy World Vegan Day!

Today is World Vegan Day; a day that celebrates the global vegan movement and the vegan lifestyle. If you are thinking about going vegan, or are a new vegan, you are part of this positive change that is happening!

Vegans are just ordinary people trying to do the best they can. We are not perfect and we are not all the same. But what we all have in common, is that we don’t want to contribute to animal exploitation and cruelty, in any way. Many vegans are green vegans like me, who also care about the impact we have on the environment.

I went vegan 9 years ago, and it was the best decision I have ever made! I honestly wish I had done it sooner! Every day I choose kindness towards animals and the environment, through the food I eat, the products I buy and the companies I support.

vegan no-bake oats cookies recipe

These vegan no-bake oats cookies are made with a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry! They are super simple to make, and great for breakfast or as an anytime snack!

For this recipe, I used oats, dates, mango, almond flakes together with almond butter, syrup, vegan butter, vanilla extract & salt. All the ingredients can be found at @foodloversmarket and the oats, dates, almond flakes and dried mango can be bought packaging free! Makes approx 18-20 oats cookies.

Have you tried any of the Almond Creamery locally made flavoured nut milks? So far I’ve tried 3 of the 4 flavours and I’m looking forward to trying the rest.

About Almond Creamery

Almond Creamery is a female owned small business that was started by Adri Geyser in 2015 as a healthy and tasty alternative to dairy milk. All ingredients are plant-based and the products are produced locally which reduces carbon emissions and waste and uses less of our precious resources.

The ingredients and the packaging

These nut milks are made with almond and macadamia milk and sweetened with dates! They contain no sugar, preservatives, colourants or flavourant. The four flavours, which include almond, chocolate, chai, vanilla and coffee and come in reusable glass 250ml bottles (3-week shelf life) which are infinitely recyclable.
