Flame grilled tender fillets from On the green side

by Sharné January 4, 2021
written by Sharné

If you are looking for a plant-based chicken alternative then this is it! On The Green Side have created delicious chicken-style flame grilled tender fillets that are the perfect substitute for your meals this Veganuary!

On the green side

on the green side

On The Green side is a Cape Town based small business that went on a mission to create a sustainable plant-based meat alternative that had the texture and taste of the real thing.

They have launched 3 vegan flavours of the amazing flame grilled tender fillets: original, smoky BBQ & moroccan. They are gluten and GMO free. You can use these in wraps, on pizza and pretty much anything.

the ingredients and the packaging

Original: water, plant protein blend 25% (soy protein, fava bean protein, pea protein, lentil flour, chickpea flour), vegetable oil (canola), garlic, salt, flavouring, yeast extract, black pepper and rosemary extract.

Smoky BBQ: water, plant protein blend 25% (soy protein, fava bean protein, pea protein, lentil flour, chickpea flour), vegetable oil (canola), lemon juice concentrate, sugar, tomato paste, naturally fermented *soy sauce, garlic, salt, yeast extract, onion, flavouring, paprika powder, *smoke flavouring, black pepper and rosemary extract.

*soy sauce: naturally fermented with no preservatives or additives.

*smoke flavouring: a concentrated liquid smoke with no preservative or additives.

Moroccan: water, plant protein blend 25% (soy protein, fava bean protein, pea protein, lentil flour, chickpea flour), vegetable oil (canola), lemon juice concentrate, sugar, tomato paste, garlic, salt, yeast extract, onion, flavouring, paprika powder, chilli powder, black pepper and rosemary extract.

The tender fillets are packaged in a recyclable plastic tray and a recyclable cardboard sleeve. I have yet to find a vegan meat product that is not packaged in plastic.

cooking & storage

These are ready to eat, so all you need to do is pan-fry them on medium heat from chilled or from frozen. Make sure they are heated throughout. Once you take them out the freezer and they have defrosted, you can keep them in the fridge for 3 days if still in packaging and 2 days if not (keep in sealed container)

where to buy?

I have bought these online at Vegan Africa and in store at Wellness Warehouse and Blue Kiwi. Have a look at their online stockist and in store pages.

Have you tried the On The Green Side products yet? Is there another vegan meat brand you would like me to add to my blog? I’d love to hear from you in a comment below. my top 10 green vegan tips

by Sharné January 3, 2021
written by Sharné

2021 marks my 10th year of being a green vegan chick! So I thought of posting 10 things that can help you be a green vegan.

1. Eat more plant-based

In 2011, I realised the food on my plate has the power to hurt or help heal the planet.

I have a deep love for all animals and know that animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Being vegan is kind of like having superpowers as I get to save animals, protect the environment and be healthier in the process. #triplethreat

Veganuary is a non-profit that inspires people across the world to try the vegan lifestyle for the month of January, or even permanently. If you are interested in eating plant-based this January, you can sign up here. Veganuary will provide you with easy meal plans, recipes, as well as helpful tips.

I created my blog in 2018 because I wanted to catalogue recipes, resources and all the green vegan products I love, in order to showcase that the green vegan lifestyle is not as hard as people think.

2. Reduce your waste

In 2018 I switched to zero waste living. It was inevitable that my green vegan journey would lead me to zero waste living, as it is one of the biggest ways to positively impact waste pollution, which not only poisons the earth but kills countless of animals.

The goal of zero waste living is not to generate zero waste, but to rather constantly strive toward reducing the waste you are personally responsible for. I no longer buy fruit and veggies in plastic packaging, and I buy most of the dry goods in my pantry packaging free. If you would like to know of places where you can shop zero waste, have a look here.

Zero waste living is a part of every aspect of my life. On my blog’s food and drink section, I share products I personally love that are packaging-free or packaged in sustainable packaging. I also have a section where I post about the on the go reusables that I like to use, as well as sections where I share the home & garden, and body & beauty products that I love.

3. Compost your food waste

When you throw organic waste in the bin, it will end up in a landfill where decomposition is anaerobic, which will produce methane – a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. During the biodegrading process in a landfill, there is very little dirt or oxygen, and hardly any micro-organisms. So, in order for aerobic biodegration to take place, organic waste needs to be placed in soil where micro-organisms, light, water, and oxygen can help break it down without causing environmental damage.

I have been trying to reduce the amount of food waste I am responsible for. One way is to buy less. Because I buy packaging-free fresh fruit and veg weekly, I can control the amount I buy of each item. I know I go through tomatoes quickly so I buy a lot, but I don’t always get to all the onions so I buy less. And, instead of throwing the food waste, I do create, together with the offcuts, into the bin, I’ve invested in Earth Probiotic Bokashi bins which, when full, I take to a local farm where it can be composted.

Bokashi bins basically allow a pre-composting fermentation process to happen, which accelerates the breakdown process. We use bokashi bins because we have a paved courtyard, and not a garden, so we can’t compost in a garden bed. We are looking into alternatives. Read more about bokashi bins here.

4. avoid fast fashion

In 2019 I made a decision to no longer support fast fashion clothing brands.

Fast fashion is basically the cheap clothing, large retailers produce quickly, to keep up with the latest trends. But what it also refers to is how quickly that clothing, once out of fashion, ends up as waste. The fast fashion industry is responsible for polluting of the oceans with micro-plastics, and contributes approx. 10% carbon emissions to the environment. Fast fashion is often made by garment workers who get paid very little, are treated unfairly and work excessive hours in horrible conditions.

Slow Fashion on the other hand, refers to good quality, timeless clothing, that is locally made, with a lower carbon footprint, which often includes aiming for zero waste. Slow fashion costs more, because it is made to last, by people who are treated fairly.

Here in South Africa we have so many amazing local clothing brands to support. I have created a fashion section on my blog so I can showcase some of these brands.

5. switch to natural ingredients

Did you know that 60% of the everyday beauty and personal care products that we use, is absorbed by our bodies? They contain harmful synthetic chemical ingredients, like petrochemical-derived ingredients, parabens, sulphates, fluoride, aluminium, and synthetic colourants and fragrances. To most, they might just be technical words written on the label of the product, but it is really important to know what they are, and how they negatively affect your body and the environment.

By using green and eco personal care products we can help decrease the toxic load on our bodies & the environment. These products contain no synthetic chemicals and use only naturally derived ingredients.

I’ve been using natural ingredient products for longer than I’ve been vegan, and have created a body & beauty section on my blog so I can share all the amazing local all-natural, cruelty-free products I love.

6. thrift

Thrifting is an amazing way to reduce waste, and save money! It takes a lot of resources and energy to make something, so buying something that already exists will reduce your carbon footprint.

I’m a huge supporter of buying second hand – most of our house is filled with pre-loved furniture and decor, and most of my clothes are second hand, if not local. A lot of the pieces in our home were passed on to us, so we saved tons of money. We regularly shop in antique stores, charity stores, on Facebook marketplace, and at thrift markets like the thrift fest.

I share a lot of the thrifted items we have in our home on my Instagram, so be sure to have a look there.

7. donate your unwanted items

When my husband and I merged our households, we had double of everything. Both of us had lots of second-hand furniture, appliances, and other bits and bobs. Our house is small, so we also had to pare down all the items in our home. What we didn’t sell on Facebook Marketplace, we donated to charity stores – mainly the Tears Charity Centre in Tokai. This way, instead of throwing it in a landfill where it will be wasted and cause harm to the environment, it can be reused by someone else, and the charity shop makes some money.

We often joke about the amount of stuff we have donated, having dropped off numerous cars full. But the truth is that it is no laughing matter. In today’s world, while so many people are struggling to survive, there are many that have much more than they need. We buy into the consumerism culture, which is filled with items that are not made to last. Living in a smaller house and living a zero-waste life has taught us to only have pieces that we love and use. Keeping something simply for the sake of it doesn’t make sense. Now we tend to buy less stuff and choose items that will last.

Donating second-hand clothing is also important, as a very small percentage of unwanted clothes actually get’s recycled. If you want to make some extra money, you could sell your clothes on Yaga, Facebook Marketplace, or to a second-hand clothing small business. And also consider mending damaged clothes instead of throwing them in the bin. And if there is something in your cupboard you no longer wear because of something you would like to change to make it fit better, then why not take it to a tailor.

8. buy local

Buying local not only helps to support the local economy but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. If you buy something made or grown in a faraway country it has to travel a significant distance. The further the distance the more greenhouse gas emissions are generated. And you also have to consider the greenhouse gas emissions involved in the storage of that product, as it will be stored on both sides of the transport.

I love buying local because I get to talk to the creators themselves. The small local businesses I support are all owned by people who care about reducing animal cruelty and protecting our environment. And they are open to evolving. I have just recently had a discussion with a small business that has agreed to take back their packaging and refill it for me, when I run out, instead of having to buy the packaging again.

My blog is full of amazing products made by local brands.

9. save water & energy

Water is a renewable resource, that is under threat. The National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas (NFEPAs ) state that 60% of our SA river ecosystems are threatened, whilst 23% are critically endangered. 65% of our wetlands are threatened, and 48% are critically endangered. We must urgently act to protect our water resources, and we must also all use water wisely.

A healthy water resource is one that has a rich natural diversity of plants and animals, and is free from harmful pollution. According to WWF Africa, the top threats to our water sources are: climate change, land degradation, coal mining, alien plants, fires, plantations, and large scale cultivation. I have also read that South Africa is approaching physical water scarcity by 2025, so we must all reduce our water consumption now, and urge our fellow South African’s to care for our waterways. I will be sharing ways that we save water at home on my blog,

Most of South Africa’s electricity is produced from coal, which releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change. We must insist on large scale change by reaching out to our local government. We desperately need them to invest in sustainable energy solutions that reduce harmful carbon emissions. Personally, each of us can save energy at home, and switch to greener alternatives. I will be sharing ways that we save energy at home on my blog,

10. share what you are doing

reusable wipes from shwely ^

by Sharné December 21, 2020
written by Sharné

These shwely handmade reusable wipes are perfect for removing your makeup or cleaning your face, but can also be used as reusable baby wipes.

^ This product was gifted to me. Opinions expressed here are my own.

shwely

shwely

Shwely wipes are 10cm x 10cm in size and handmade in Cape Town. You can buy a single wipe (unpackaged) or a pack of 7 (tied with a ribbon) with or without a fabric pouch to store them in. They come in a variety of patterns, and I just love this one, because it makes me think of olives. Each reusable wipe is has a patterned fabric on the one side, and microfibre on the other.

The amazing thing about using reusable wipes every day, is that not only do you save money in the long run, you also drastically reduce your waste.  It is recommended to wash a reusable cloth after every use, and by keeping them together in a mesh bag, it makes them easier to find in your load of washing and it also protects them.

If you are planning on using these as baby wet wipes then you are also not exposing your baby to the chemicals often found in traditional single use wet wipes. To use these as wet wipes, just run them under warm water, and give them a quick squeeze but if you are out and about you take along a spray bottle with water. After use you can store them in a sealed bag if you are out and about, or a mesh bag at home, which you can throw in the machine without getting your hands dirty. After washing, hang on the line to dry if possible.

where to buy?

You can buy these directly from Shwely (send a DM on Instagram) or from Organic Living and Tenga Tenga in Cape Town and online at The Bear Necessities (KZN based).

Have you invested in reusable wipes? Let me know in the comments below. If you’d like to see more of the body & beauty products I have found, have a look here. If you’d like to see what home & garden products I have found have a look here. New products posted regularly.

upcycled plastic baubles from Woolworths

by Sharné December 20, 2020
written by Sharné

These Woolworths christmas baubles are locally made from plastic bottles and are the perfect addition to my zero waste christmas.

woolworths

the power of upcycling plastic

When you rescue 13 000 plastic bottles from ending up in landfill and ask a local small business, Essay Gifts, that uses township-based suppliers, to hand make 1000’s of reusable christmas baubles, thats a win in my books. I’m on a mission to not buy any more mass produced christmas decor, so when I spotted these at Woolworths I fell in love. Making something beautiful from waste that is reusbable and hand made ticks all the boxes for me, so I happily invested in a few.

where to buy?

You can buy the recycled plastic baubles directly from the Woolworths online shop or at selected Woolworth stores. There are 3 designs and they are currently on sale.

If you’d like to see more of the christmas products I have found have a look here.  Or have a look at the home & garden products I have found, here. Alternitevely, If you’d like to see what body & beauty products I have found, have a look here.  New products posted regularly.

big fry

big fry plant-based meats from Fry’s

by Sharné December 19, 2020
written by Sharné

The Fry Family Food Co. have created a BIG FRY BOEREWORS & a BIG FRY BURGER that has the texture and taste of meat! If you have not tried it yet, then I highly reccommend that you do! I’ll be gifting my meat eating brother some this Christmas so he can try them too.

big fry

The Fry Family Food Co.

The Fry Family Food Co. aka Fry’s has been around for longer than I have been vegan. Fry’s started in 1991, after Wally Fry built a piggery for a client and he saw first hand how the pigs were treated. He realised that he couldn’t stand by anymore, and everything his vegetarian wife Debbie and their vegetarian daughters stood for become clear. Wally realised that “all life is precious, and I can live without sacrificing the life of another”.  Wally became a vegetarian and set about creating a meat alternative, that was high in protein and had the same taste and texture as meat. Today Fry’s have a 5000sqm factory in Durban, and they employ over 400 people. Fry’s are sold in approximately 12,000 stores in more than 30 countries. Just think of all the animals that have been saved, because many people accross the world is eating Fry’s instead. And it’s all thanks to the Fry family.

When I was a kid, we would always have Fry’s products in the freezer for when my vegetarian uncle came to visit. When I went vegan in 2011, Fry’s was there for me. That might sound a bit dramatic, but I went vegan overnight and the Fry’s range of vegan meats made it easier! I could have burgers, hot dogs, cottage pie and a lot of familiar foods I had eaten before going vegan. Just with different ingredients. To this day I still have Fry’s products in the freezer, and so does my mother, who went vegan in 2013!

When people ask about vegan meats I always tell them to look out for the bright green boxes in the freezer section at their local grocery store. You can’t miss them! It seems that Fry’s will be changing that packaging soon, so if you don’t spot Fry’s in the freezer at your local grocery store, take another look.

I love that Fry’s have a wide range of vegan meats, and that they are all cost-effective. One of the first products I remember trying was the traditional sausages, and since then they have expanded their range drastically and now offer plant-based burgers, sausages, nuggets, schnitzels, mince, strips, seafood, snacks, pastries and pies. For the last few years, I stopped buying products containing palm-oil so there are a few of the Fry’s products that I no longer eat.  I’m hoping they will remove palm-oil from their sausage rolls and pies, coz I really miss those.

big fry

the ingredients and the packaging

Both of the Big Frys’ are palm oil free which makes me so happy! Thank You Fry’s! Both are great sources of protein with there being 20g of protein per 112g patty and 19G of plant protein per sausage. The Boerewors is packaged in a cardboard box with a plastic packet on the inside, and the Burger is packaged in a plastic container that is sealed with plastic and has a cardboard sleeve. I have yet to find a locally made vegan meat brand that doesn’t package in plastic. Of the few plastic packaged items I still buy, vegan meats is top of the short list.

THE BIG FRY BOEREWORS: Vegetable Protein (20%) (Wheat (Gluten), Soya), Onions(5%), Vegetable Oil (Sunflower Seed), Dijon Mustard(2%), Corn Flour, Flavourings (Coriander, Sugar, Salt, Savoury Flavour, Garlic, White Pepper, Nutmeg, Ginger), Thickener (Methylcellulose), Smoke Flavour, Beetroot, Plant Fibre (Bamboo), Paprika, Cilantro, Black Pepper, Parsley, Turmeric, Colourant: Caramel IV (E150d), Calcium Alginate Casing.

THE BIG FRY BURGER: Vegetable Protein (Soya, Wheat(Gluten)), Onions, Vegetable Oil (Sunflower Seed), Dijon Mustard, Corn Flour, Salt, Coriander Seeds, Thickener (Methylcellulose), Onion Powder, Beetroot Powder, Paprika, Smoke Flavour, Garlic Powder, Flavourings (0.1%), Cilantro, White Pepper, Black Pepper, Parsley, Turmeric, Colourant: Caramel IV.

where to buy?

I bought these at Pick ‘n Pay in Constantia Village, but you can find Fry’s products in nearly every grocery store.

Have you tried the Big Fry products yet? Is there another vegan meat brand you would like me to add to my blog? I’d love to hear from you in a comment below. If you’d like to see more vegan/plant-based meats I have found, have a look here. If you’d like to see other food products I have found have a look here.  New products posted regularly.

diy christmas crackers *

by Sharné December 17, 2020
written by Sharné

I recently attended a few Christmas workshops presented by Food Lover’s Market and was inspired to DIY this year’s table decoration. I used items I already have to decorate the table and instead of buying Christmas crackers filled with items my guests and I probably don’t need or want, I decided to make my own and use them as both a gift and decor.

* This post is a paid sponsorship with Food Lover’s Market. Opinions expressed here are my own.

What you will need:

1. Paper. You can use any paper you already have at home. I used brown paper that was used to protect items in one of the deliveries I received. I always keep these, so I can reuse them for future gifts I’ll be giving.

2. Toilet paper rolls. I keep toilet paper rolls as they have so many uses.

3. String. A few years ago I bought a big roll of red and white cotton string and have been using it every Christmas. I also love jute string, as it is also biodegradable.

4. Cracker Snaps. You can buy these at Merrypak

You can fill these with whatever you want. I took some dried fruit and nuts I bought packaging-free at FLM and wrapped them in some leftover paper and put them inside the crackers.

Here are some other ideas: diy paper crowns, seeds (herbs etc), chocolates, small items like lip balms or mini bottles of gin, notes, jokes, challenges etc.

Let me know if you have some other ideas for fillings. I’d love to hear from you in a comment below.  If you’d like to see more DIY’s have a look here. Alternatively, If you are looking for some vegan recipe inspiration, have a look here.
