My green vegan journey

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

For as long as I can remember, I have been aware of the impact I have on the environment. I have been constantly trying to find more and better ways to lower my carbon footprint and to use as little of the Earth’s natural resources as possible. Reading sustainability blogs and books and watching documentaries like An Inconvenient Truth  helped me along the way. It was a Green Living journey that evolved as I learned more.  I recycled, bought only earth-friendly beauty and home products, and refused plastic bags to use reusable ones when shopping. I composted my kitchen waste and took a reusable mug to work. I supported local whenever I could, saved energy and used less water. Even my toilet paper was green.

Going green doesn’t start with doing green acts, it starts with a shift in consciousness

Ian Somerhalder

In 2011 I had a major shift in consciousness when I learned that the most powerful way to help the environment was to stop eating animal products. I started to read more and more about the impact livestock has on the environment. I had no idea that the livestock industry could be responsible for up to 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, which is said to be the leading cause of global warming. And that the consumption of animal products contributes to malnutrition in the developing world, water scarcity, deforestation, pollution, species extinction, and land degradation, by using land and resources for livestock instead of crops for direct food sources.

The tipping point

One evening I ended up on PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) website. I watched ‘Meet Your Meat’. An 11 minute behind the scenes video exposing what goes on in factory farms. I was horrified. I cried so hard while watching the video that I had trouble seeing through my tears. But I carried on watching. I couldn’t ignore the truth. I had never before really thought of meat as living, breathing animals who feel pain, who love.

Well, actually, I have always had an issue with meat that looked like the animal it came from. As a kid I especially hated seafood restaurants because they served things like crayfish, lobster, squid, and fish. You could see exactly what it had been. I hated it when my mom (who became Vegan 2 years after I did) asked me to remove the meat from a cooked chicken because I could feel the ribs of the chicken, and see by its shape that it was a being, not a thing. I preferred my meat to be ‘anonymous’ so I didn’t have to think about it as a being. It bugged me for years but I ignored it and carried on eating meat.

Society might be telling you it’s ok, but what does your heart say

Unknown

The change

Right after watching ‘Meet Your Meat’, I realised that by buying animal products, I was not only contributing towards harming the environment, but that I was contributing towards the exploitation of animals. I couldn’t be a part of it anymore. That’s when I decided to go Vegan. I knew that being Vegetarian wouldn’t work because I would still be supporting exploitation and violence against animals.

The next morning I was Vegan! I stopped eating the obvious products that came from animals such as meat, chicken, fish and eggs, including dairy products. I started researching Vegan Life and realised that it wasn’t that simple. I understand why people find going Vegan to be intimidating – there is a lot to consider. It is not just about what you eat.

My journey

It is important to understand that becoming Vegan isn’t a diet, it is a lifestyle. And it is also important to understand that not all Vegans are the same. People become Vegan for different reasons which tend to be either ethical, environmental, or health based. I did not become Vegan because I did not like the taste of animal products. Becoming vegan was inevitable because I care deeply about the environment and all animals.

My previous lifestyle had a huge negative impact on the planet, and I contributed to the cause of animal cruelty and exploitation. I needed to take responsibility for my choices and make a positive change. If not immediately, then when? I have been a Green Vegan for many years now, but my Green Vegan lifestyle is a continuous evolution. Finding new ways to reduce my impact on the environment, and to reduce my part in the exploitation of animals, is something I am always working on.

No single food choice has a farther-reaching and more profoundly positive impact on our health, the environment, and all of life on Earth than choosing vegan.

Alternative Baking Company

Defining Veganism

As a Vegan I don’t eat any animal-derived foods including milk, cheese & honey. I eat only plant-based foods which include an array of fruits, vegetables, nuts and even vegan ‘substitute’ products for items such as milk, cream, ice cream, cheese, meats, etc… I don’t use animal products or by-products, including beeswax, wool, fur, silk, down & leather.

I don’t buy products that have been tested on animals. I do buy products that contain no animal products, are natural and biodegradable, and free from harmful chemicals. From my bamboo toothbrush, to my makeup, my roll-on, and extending all the way to my household cleaning products.

I don’t support places where animals are kept in captivity for profit such as zoos, aquariums and animal parks. I do however support animal sanctuaries where the aim is to take care of animals that have been rescued from places of exploitation. These animals have lived in captivity for so long that they cannot be released into the wild. The sanctuaries provide a natural enclosure where they can live out their lives with minimal human interaction, where visitors can respectfully observe animals but not interact with them.

As a Vegan, I don’t support the breeding of domesticated animals such as horses, dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, birds or fish. I do however support rescue organisations where you can adopt. I have adopted a few ‘fur kids’ of my own.

Not all vegans agree

Most Vegans feel the same as me with regards to the points I mentioned above. There are however, some items that not all vegans agree on. For example, in the vegan community there is an on-going debate about palm oil. Rain forests where Orangutans and other animals are living are being destroyed to make space for palm oil plantations. For this reason I don’t buy products (even if they are vegan) that contain palm oil, but many Vegans do.

As I said, not all Vegans are the same. I personally don’t support using an animal in any way, and for this reason I also don’t support horse riding. From doing lots of research about it and I have learnt that riding a horse causes skeletal, muscular and tissue damage over time, and that a horse can get sufficient exercise without the need to have a human sitting on top.

A different kind of vegan

I also don’t support companies that may not test on animals themselves, but do sell their products in countries where governmental agencies require animal testing to demonstrate the ingredient ‘safety’. These are the big companies that have many brands under them, and most are on the shelves of almost every store that I shop at.

Based on my research, here are some: Coco-Cola (Fanta, Sprite, Powerade, etc), Pepsico (Pepsi, Lays, Fritos, etc), Nestlé (Nescafé, Maggi, Milo, etc), Mars (Skittles, M&M’s, Airwaves, etc),  P&G (Pampers, Ariel, Head & Shoulders), Johnson & Johnson’s (Neutrogena, Clean & Clear, Listerine, etc), Unilever (Flora, Robertsons, Knorr, etc), and General Mills (Nature Village, Haagen Dazs, Cheerios, etc).

The above links go to the pages on their websites where they state that they allow third party testing. Have a look at their products page if you want to know which other brands fall under these big companies. I will only support them once they stop selling their products in the countries that require animal testing.

Since going Vegan in 2011, I have witnessed a worldwide shift away from consuming animal products. The world is changing and becoming more aware, and it is wonderful to see. People are taking an interest in knowing where their food comes from and how it’s produced.

Be the change that you wish to see in the world

MAHATMA GANDHI

the future is vegan

Thanks to documentaries like ‘Forks Over Knives’ (available on Netflix), people are becoming more aware of the negative health impacts of eating meat and animal products, and the many health benefits of plant-based eating. The World Health Organisation has linked cancer to processed meats. The demand for dairy-free milk is increasing, while the demand for dairy milk is declining.

why I started ‘the green vegan chick’ blog

The availability of Green & Vegan products has increased dramatically, and I am finding new products I hadn’t noticed before every time I go to the shop. I started posting about them on my social media accounts so others could know about them too. I also started posting the meals I made, and then included the recipes, as people were asking for them.

My Green Vegan Journey has led me to creating this very Cape Town-based  The Green Vegan Chick blog in order to create a directory of Green Vegan products I discover, as well as a database of the recipes I create. My hope is that it shows that going green and or vegan is a joy, and not a sacrifice.

The future depends on what we do in the present.

Vegan Buddha bowl – Spirit Cafe

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

Last weekend we stopped for lunch at Spirit Cafe in Constantia Village, where I had the most amazing Vegan Buddha Bowl – literally the best I have ever had!!!

Luncheon Munchin’ at the Spirit Café

Spirit Café is a cozy little Vegetarian café located in Constantia. The V on their menu indicates the Vegan options. There are two V’s on the breakfast list, one V on the lunch menu, and nine V’s on the smoothie list. We were there for lunch so I had one choice – a Buddha Bowl. Easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had the extreme pleasure of eating.

We are a home-away-from-home space, serving food that tastes amazing and is also super-good for you.

Lip Smackin’ Smoothie

We ordered a large Berry Beautiful vegan smoothie. It was berry, berry beautiful, if I say so myself. And so delicious. The menu list the ingredients as banana, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, filtered water, coconut oil, dates, and Himalayan salt. It was such a creamy, delicious smoothie that we bought strawberries later that day to try make our own at home (their version wins hands down, every time). And don’t forget the glass straws…

Vegan Buddha Bowl

The Vegan Buddha Bowl is amazing. Their menu says that it’s a mix of grains, greens, kimchi, slaw and avo. But, it is so much more. Every single item was exquisite. I made quite a few mmm…’s throughout the entire meal, and couldn’t stop singing it’s praises.  Their beetroot was definitely not from a bottle, and was surely made with love, or something close to it.  The kimchi was divine. The greens were terrific. It was just a match made in someplace wonderful. It may seem like I am being a bit over the top, but it has to be known just how good the Vegan Buddha Bowl was.

And For Dessert

The counter in the cafe boasts some delicious looking desserts and, of course, I wanted whatever was vegan. So it goes without saying that we took some Vegan brownies home, to enjoy with tea later, and as such, tea time was shortly after getting home, and I couldn’t help but gobble my brownie up, and my boyfriend’s. It was delicious – a creamy, chocolaty top with a crumbly base. Technically speaking, not what I would call a brownie, but definitely amazing.

Egg free Vegan Mayo – B-well

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

B-well have a range of dairy free, egg free, vegan mayo products that are simply delicious.

vegan mayo

B-well vegan mayo

B-well’s egg free, canola oil, mayo is a healthier alternative to regular mayo, without compromising the taste.  To make their egg-free mayo, B-well substitutes the eggs with a vegetable protein, so their mayo is 100% animal product free, and therefore (yay) completely vegan. And, because the B-well mayo is low in salt and saturated fat, they are the first, and only, mayo in the country to be endorsed by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of SA.

B-well have four egg free vegan mayo products, three of which that I buy and use often. They are truly amazing – I have at least one of them in my fridge at any time. The Original Tangy mayo tastes exactly like ‘normal’ mayo so it is perfect for a potato salad, whereas the Thick & Creamy one doesn’t have that tang, making it perfect for any dish to which you want to add a creamy element. I have even used it in a vegan chicken mayo recipe here. The Olive and Canola option is similar to the original tangy, but has a subtle olive oil flavour. I have not tried the Reduced Oil version yet. If anyone else has, please let me know in a comment below.

We’re taking small steps towards making a big change in the food industry. We want to do things differently, we believe that everyone should be able to eat delicious food that’s healthier, more affordable and better for the environment.

Bwell

Other B-well products

B-well also have a cool range of oils, as well as a vegan sandwich spread, that I would love to use and post about in the future. I have used their wok oil in a recipe here. They really are a great company, that produce locally farmed, healthy products. Although the B-well‘s products are amazing, I wish that they would switch from plastic packaging to glass. What do you think?

Where to buy?

B-well products are available at most Pick n Pay, Food Lovers Market, and Spar stores nationwide. You can also buy it at The Kind Kitchen at 252 Albert Rd, WoodstockWoodstock. Their mayos are available in the standard 740ml tub as well as the mini 370ml tub.

If you’d like to see more of the food products I have found, have a look here. Finally, look at my directory for a list of all the awesome vegan products I have found locally.

Savoury Rice and Veg recipe with Quorn *

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

This vegan dinner plate is loaded with savoury rice, sautéed green beans, steamed peas, steamed broccoli and Quorn vegan nuggets.

Quorn Vegan Nuggets

Years after going vegan in 2011, I discovered this awesome brand called Quorn, who make these magic vegan ‘chicken’ style products that look like chicken, taste like chicken, but are definitely not chicken. They currently have a small selection of vegan products available in SA that are healthier, cruelty free, alternatives to chicken. If you have not tried any of them yet, you should. The Quorn vegan nuggets are amazing on their own, or added to any dish. You’ll find them in the freezer section at Pick ‘n Pay, Spar and Checkers. As a rule, remember to look out for the Vegan label on the front of their packaging, as most of the Quorn products are vegetarian.

Vegan Savoury Rice and Veg

Firstly, to create this vegan dinner plate, I made a delicious savoury rice by combining rice, vegetable stock, onion, garlic, green pepper and peas. While this was cooking, I sautéed green beans together with olive oil, vegan margarine, garlic and black pepper. Lastly, I steamed peas and broccoli and then baked some Quorn Vegan Nuggets.

Tropical Vegan Smoothie Bowl recipe

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

A heavenly tropical vegan smoothie bowl, with a mix of banana, grapes, plums, raspberries and dairy free milk, and topped with coconut chips, banana, plums and raspberries.

vegan smoothie bowl

What is a vegan smoothie bowl?

You might have seen them on Instagram, beautiful colourful bowls of  thick liquid, artfully decorated with an arrangement of fruits and other pretty edibles. Compared to a traditional vegan smoothie that is sipped with a straw, a vegan smoothie bowl has a slightly thicker consistency, which has to be eaten with a spoon. It’s a thick blend of frozen fruits, nuts, seeds and dairy free milk. Serve the mixture in a bowl, and top it with fruit, nuts and other yummy toppings.

Tropical vibes

Create this tropical vegan smoothie bowl by blending frozen banana, grapes, plums, raspberries, and dairy free milk all together in the Nutribullet. Thereafter, I usually top it with Good Life Organic coconut chips, fresh sliced banana, plums and raspberries.

vegan lentil spaghetti recipe

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

I made a vegan lentil spaghetti using lentils, tomatoes, onions, peas, coconut milk, spices and vegan Gouda cheese from Nature & Moi.

lentil spaghetti

I often get asks what I, as a Vegan eat, and i usually say, what ever you eat I can eat Vegan. Vegans can eat pastas, pizza’s, burgers and ice cream. The ingredients are just different. Before going vegan in 2011, I loved spaghetti. So once I was vegan I started “veganising” my favourite meals. One of the ways I like to make a vegan spaghetti is by using lentils as my base and adding Nature & Moi vegan cheese.

vegan lentil spaghetti

For this vegan lentil spaghetti, I used lentils from a can,  a can of tomato and onion mix, frozen peas, tomato paste, a can of coconut milk, some vegan Ina Paarman garlic & herb spice, together with Nature & Moi Gouda cheese. Have a look at my vegan cheese post here, to see what other vegan cheese flavours Nature & Moi offers.

Vegan Cheese – Nature & Moi

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

Nature & Moi have a range of delicious affordable mozzarella, cheddar and gouda vegan cheese which are available Checkers.

vegan cheese

Vegan cheese

Vegans can eat cheese! When I first went Vegan in 2011, I did not know that there was even such a thing as Vegan cheese. I now know that that there are many different types of Vegan cheese and that some are expensive (around R100) and others like these from Nature & Moi are more affordable (under R50).

Where to buy?

Nature & Moi have a range of coconut oil based Vegan cheese products, of which only a few are currently available in SA. At your local Checkers you should be able to get, when they are not sold out, the following flavours: Mozzarella, Cheddar and Gouda. They are now available in 3 options: block, sliced or grated.

vegan cheese

Let me just say that this Vegan cheese is different in texture and taste compared to ‘traditional’ cheese. It is a great alternative for people who are Vegan and love cheese. I use it on a sandwich, in a pasta, on a pizza and even eat it as is. I have noticed that there is a trick to getting it to melt though. The times when the cheese has melted really well is when it has been exposed to moisture. The steam inside a just made closed vegan pasta dish helps the cheese to melt. And I have a nifty melt function on my microwave (yeah i know they are bad for you) that melts my vegan cheese and tomato sandwiches perfectly. I’d like to get a sandwich press and see how that works.

Have you tried any of the Nature & Moi vegan cheese flavours? What is your dish to make with vegan cheese? I’d love to hear from you in a comment below. Reusable fruit and veggie bags – Freshbag

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

Say no thanks to single use fruit and veggie plastic bags and switch to reusable bags.

I’ve been trying to come up with more ways to integrate reusable items into my daily routine. That way I can reduce the amount of plastic waste I generate. I’ve been using my envirosax reusable shopping bags for longer than I’ve been vegan (since 2011). Using them has become a part of my everyday shopping habits. There are 3 in my handbag so I have them with me all the time and use them everywhere. Isn’t it horrible that when you go to buy loose fruit and veg, you get those thin single use plastic bags. If I am not mistaken, they can’t be recycled and will most certainly end up in a landfill or even in the ocean. We have developed a “disposable” lifestyle and single use plastic has created a rubbish problem that now pollutes every corner of the world.

50% of plastic is used once then thrown away.

The truly scary thing is that all the plastic ever created still exists. This is because plastic can’t biodegrade; it photo degrades. This means it breaks down into smaller pieces, which is still plastic. When plastic waste is collected and transported to a landfill site, and even when it is in a landfill already, there is always a risk that the light weight plastic waste will blow away and end up in trees, our rivers and even our oceans. Currently there is so much plastic waste in the ocean that in some places there is more tiny plastic particles than plankton. And we are to blame as it is estimated that approximately 80% of the garbage in our oceans comes from land, from us.

Today we use plastic, a product designed to last forever, for products designed to last minutes.

unknown

Small change – big impact

As consumers we must take matters into our own hands. We must refuse single use plastic. That way shops will have to provide us with reusable alternatives. I knew there had to already be an alternative to these single use bags and was so happy to find quite a few.  I am the proud owner of locally produced Freshbag reusable bags made from a light-weight nylon mesh. They are strong, fold up real small, are easy to use and super cute. Now I pop them in my handbag and use them every time I buy loose fruit and veg. I have noticed that the price sticker tends to fall off of the fabric so I tend to just wrap the barcode sticker around the ribbon drawstring.

Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can change the world.

Where to buy?

I bought mine directly from Freshbag. Have a look at the order page on their website. You can also buy them from Organic Living, and online on Faithful to Nature.

vegan junk food – lekker vegan

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

I love to indulge in some vegan junk food. Just because I eat plant based doesn’t mean that I eat salad all the time.  Thank goodness I live in Cape Town because that is where Lekker Vegan is located.

gourmet vegan junk food

Lekker Vegan is the perfect vegan restaurant if you want some amazing vegan junk food. They have a great selection of vegan burgers, wraps, toasties, snacks, desserts and even have vegan soft serve.

What I also love about them is that their prices are really good. Often vegan options are crazy expensive but at Lekker Vegan you can buy a yummy vegan meal that won’t break the bank. Since they have opened I have tried quite a few of the items on their menu. I really enjoy their food so I will definitely be back to try the rest..

Vegan Gourmet Junk Food. Burgers, chips, gatsby’s, snacks & soft serve. Just better and cruelty-free.

Lekker Vegan

Lekker Crispy Burger

This is the Lekker Crispy Burger which is the first item I tried on their menu shortly after they opened at the end of last year. It is loaded with a crispy fried patty, vegan melted cheddar, fried onion rings, lettuce, tomato, lekker OG sauce, sour cream & onion crisps.  It is seriously delicious. You have to try it!! You have the option to make it naked (bunless salad version), add avo or double the patty. The burger on it’s own is very filling so the fact that it doesn’t come with chips is actually a good thing, but if you want some you have to remember to order that separately. They have crispy potato chips and crispy sweet potato chips on their menu under the snacks section. They are also amazing and come with a delicious sauce.

Lekker beefy gatsby – half portion

Of course I would try the half lekker beefy gatsby! It’s a vegan gatsby loaded with smokey vegan beef strips, crispy chips, vegan cheddar cheeze, lekker spicy sauce, lekker lettuce & tomato, red onion and jalapenos in a crispy bun. Little did i know that the half was so big that i had to use 2 hands to get a grip. I tried my best but only managed to eat half of the half! You could easily share it with someone. It’s a lot of bang for your buck and tastes so good! You have to try it!

Lekker Chick’n Bunini

I have ordered this one quite a few times. The Lekker Chick’n Bunini is filled with vegan chicken pieces, lekker mayo, spring onion & sesami seeds. They mayo that they used gives it a subtle creamy flavour.

Lekker Spicy Burger

If you like spicy meals then this one is for you! This is the Lekker Spicy Burger, which consists of a crispy fried patty, fresh jalapenos, asian pickled cucumber, lettuce, tomato, a lekker spicy sauce and sweet chilly crisps. It really is very good.

Lekker Satay Wrappy

I recently tried this one for the first time. The Lekker Satay Wrappy is a filled with tasti taters, lekker satay sauce, lettuce, tomato, lekker spicy sauce and spring onion. It is a great quick meal if you, like me, often forget to take food to work.

Apple crumble pie

Oh my! A mini vegan apple crumble pie! Need i say more. Let me just say that it is amazing and I have had it a few times!

Vegan Coffee Smoothie recipe

by Sharné October 15, 2018
written by Sharné

A vegan coffee smoothie with dairy free milk, coffee and a frozen banana.

A vegan coffee smoothie

Don’t you just love the smell and taste of coffee? Hot or cold, I love it. One of my favourite drinks, before I became vegan in 2011, was an iced coffee. I have been wanting to try to make a vegan smoothie version for a while now, however I hadn’t found a recipe for it, so, I experimented a bit, and created this one.

It’s never too cold for iced coffee

unknown

The bulk of this vegan smoothie is made up of dairy free milk, coffee and a frozen banana. Certainly, there are many dairy-free milks on the market, but I suggest to start with one you love. Similarly, I know not everyone likes strong coffee, so adjust the amount of coffee to your taste.

How to make it

To make the vegan coffee smoothie thicker and creamier you can freeze your banana beforehand. To turn this into a breakfast smoothie, I added Good Life Organic coconut chips and Passion 4 Wholeness muesli.  All the ingredients go into a NutriBullet, blend them together, until you are happy with the consistency, and, just like that, it’s done.

I absolutely love serving smoothies in a glass jar, with one of my reusable straws. I now have quite a collection of straw types – this one is a straight smoothie (thicker version) glass straw from Stream Straws (see post here)

What is your favourite smoothie? Do you use reusable straws? Let me know in the comments below.  If you’d like to see similar recipes, feel free to head on over to my smoothie recipe page. To see some of my other recipes, have a look here. I post new recipes fairly regularly, so follow me to see them as they come out. Finally, look at my directory for a list of all the awesome vegan products I have found locally. I post about new products that I find pretty regularly, as well.
