Reusable glass jars – Consol

by Sharné June 28, 2019
written by Sharné

I’m on a mission to reduce my plastic use, and consequently have fallen in love with the many, many uses of glass jars.

happy earth people

Why switch to glass?

Firstly, we all know plastic containers are super convenient, but it’s important to note that they are harmful to us, and to the environment. My green vegan journey (read about it here) has led me to gradually move towards a plastic container free kitchen.

I do have a lot of plastic containers, which are in perfect condition and seal really well. As far as possible, all food containers I buy in future will be glass. I especially love re-using used glass jars, that originally held store-bought products. They can be used in many different ways, to store all sorts of things – I even use them as a glass for my smoothies.

the best things come in a glass

Consol

Glass has so many benefits, and here are some that I know of: Firstly, they are infinitely recyclable. They are free of BPA, and other harmful synthetic chemicals. Glass preserves taste, and keeps things fresh. Lastly, they have a longer shelf life than most other forms of food packaging.

  • reusable glass jars

Where to buy Consol re-usable glass jars?

First prize would be to reuse glass jars instead of recycling them. And you can buy Consol jars directly from a Consol Shop, or at places like Merrypak, Makro, Faithful To Nature and Yuppichef. Likewise, you can usually buy them from most Plastic Stores – ironic isn’t it?

Do you use re-usable glass jars? Do you have any other suggestions on how I can reduce my plastic waste? shampoo and conditioner bar from shop zero

by Sharné May 26, 2019
written by Sharné

if you are still using plastic-packaged shampoo and conditioner packed full of chemicals then I highly recommend you switch to all-natural shampoo and conditioner bars.

shop zero

why make the switch?

Did you know that traditional bottled shampoo and conditioner contain many toxic chemicals, some that are carcinogens (cause cancer) and others that affect the organs and the central nervous system, to name a few.

Many of these chemicals are also harmful to the environment. Companies are allowed to use these chemicals and don’t have to tell us what harm they do. We are poisoning ourselves every day because we don’t know the truth. We have to educate ourselves.

Why not rather switch to an all-natural alternative. For over 10 years I have been using bottled natural shampoo and conditioner and recently made the switch to plastic-free versions when I made the connection between single-use plastic packaging and environmental pollution it causes.

the ingredients and the packaging

The shampoo bar lathers beautifully and the conditioner bar detangles my hair perfectly. One thing I have to mention is that after using the conditioner bar I have to make sure to rinse my hair properly otherwise it looks oily when dry. The conditioner bar is made with conditioning wax, shea butter, cocoa butter, castor oil, grapeseed oil sweet orange essential oil, and cinnamon leaf essential oil. The shampoo bar is made with saponified coconut oil, mica, and a blend of essential oils: sweet orange, lime, lemon, benzoin, and patchouli.

These bars don’t have any packaging but if you buy them online they are delivered in a brown paper bag, which I keep to reuse for packaging something else.

Where to buy?

This vegan shampoo and conditioner bar is available in-store and online from Shop Zero.

What shampoo and conditioner are you currently using?  Let me know in the comments below. If you’d like to see more of the body & beauty products I have found, have a look here. If you’d like to see what home & garden products I have found have a look here.  New products posted regularly.

gluten free vegan waffles – jessy’s waffles

by Sharné May 26, 2019
written by Sharné

If you want to indulge in some gluten free, cruelty free waffles then be sure to head on over to Jessy’s Waffles in Gardens, Cape Town.

The creation of Jessy’s Waffles

Jessy knew she wanted to create a food business and was originally planning on a food truck. Then one day, while experimenting with a vegan waffle recipe, she realised she was on to something. Jessy perfected the recipe over a few months, and started selling her waffles at a market. Now she has a very cute little spot in Dunkley Square where many vegans and non-vegans go to get their waffle fix.

Vegan Waffles and more

Jessy’s Waffles sell an amazing range of savoury and sweet waffles as well as flap jacks, ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. You can also build your own flapjacks and waffles. My non-vegan boyfriend and I each ordered a waffle, his was a cinnamon waffle with blue berries, chocolate sauce and chocolate ice cream.  Mine was a vanilla waffle with berries, cinnamon sugar and vanilla ice cream.

We gave each other half of the others so that we could experience both types. I have to say the cinnamon base is amazing and the vanilla is delicious. The portions are huge, so much so that both of us could not finish. Well we didn’t complain as we both had the rest at home later that day.  We will most definitely be back to try the flap jacks and milkshakes.

sauteed herb mushrooms and spinach with red pepper sauce over wild rice vegan recipe

by Sharné May 26, 2019
written by Sharné

I recently made a quick and easy mushroom based recipe served with rice. As with most of my recipes, I try to use what I have in my fridge. For this recipe, I used portabellini mushrooms, spinach, and red pepper as my main ingredients.

mushrooms
mushrooms

Mushrooms are one of my favourites. I’m always trying to come up with new ways to cook with it. This time I decided to mix mushrooms with some spinach I had in the fridge. I wanted to make a sauce, but didn’t have coconut milk so I improvised by making a sauce with a red pepper.

First I sauteed the red pepper in some olive oil, and on a impulse i added some garlic. I then added salt and pepper. Once it was ready I added the red pepper to my nutribullet and blitsed it quickly. Voila! As easy as that.

Next I added the spinach to the pan with some olive oil. I bought an amazing herb spice at the mushrooms stand at the the Oranjezicht Market in Granger Bay. I added the mushrooms and herbs to the pan and sauteed it till ready. Thinking back I probably should have done the mushrooms first, and then added the spinach afterwards. Note for next time.

When the mushrooms were done, I added the red pepper sauce and served it with wild rice. I will definitely be playing around with this recipe and hope it inspires you to experiment with yours.

Scroll down for the full instructions to make this recipe.

Delicious Vegan Burger – The Courtyard Cafe

by Sharné May 5, 2019
written by Sharné

The Courtyard Café in Kalk Bay recently updated their menu to include even more vegan options. I tried their new vegan burger and have to say it is one of, if not the best vegan burger I have ever had!

courtyard café

My vegan mom and I recently spent a Sunday afternoon in Kalk Bay. We browsed the shops, bought plants (#plantaddicts) and afterward, I suggested we stop at The Courtyard Café for lunch. I had been there before and had the pleasure in meeting the chef who told me a little about the new vegan items that they were going to add to the menu.

If you haven’t been, The Courtyard Café is literally in a courtyard which you enter from the ground floor between the Artvark gallery and The Kalk Bay theatre on Main Road. They are open from Monday to Sunday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Look out for the A-frame café sign that is usually along the Road.

The café has both outside and inside areas, and if you want a view of the Main road and the ocean then I would suggest you grab a table in the outdoor seating area that is right above the entrance to the café. Inside there is a cozy seating arrangement which is the perfect place to read a book, have a vegan date ball and sip a vegan coffee made with their very own almond milk (if they have any left).

What makes the new menu so great is that there are multiple vegan options for breakfast and lunch as well as for dessert. After each ordering, a G&T, and browsing the menu, both my mom and I wanted to try the vegan burger and was completely blown away! Have you ever had such a great meal that you literally mmmm… with every bite? Well, this is one of those meals.

courtyard café

The burger consists of a homemade vegan patty made with lentils, barley & mushroom; which is topped with rocket, tomato, pickled red onions, homemade vegan mayo, and the most delicious homemade vegan pesto. Served in a vegan roll, with potato crisps on the side together with a warm tomato relish, which I want to buy in bulk and eat every day for the rest of my life!  The combination of flavours is truly amazing. I will definitely be back to try it again. And I definitely want to try the vegan omelette, vegan french toast, vegan falafel pita, and every other vegan item I have not tried yet. The chef is a vegan genius and the café is now my new favourite spot in Kalk Bay!

Have you been to The Courtyard Café? What is your favourite vegan dish? LIL Waste Free Grocer & Cafe – Glencairn

by Sharné May 2, 2019
written by Sharné

The Low Impact Living (LIL) Grocer & Café in Glencairn is a zero shopper’s dream in the making where one can shop for waste free fruit, vegetables, dry goods, and have something to eat and drink.

waste free

What is zero waste shopping?

When you go shopping at your local grocer, you’ll notice that most items are packaged in plastic. Yes, some of the packagings can be recycled but most will end up in the bin, and ultimately a landfill, after being used only once. The aim of a zero waste shop is not to buy something that can be recycled, instead of ending up in a landfill, but to rather buy something that requires no disposal whatsoever. The zero waste movement is all about reusing, and not wasting.

“Buy Less, choose well, make it last”

unknown

Once we as consumers are aware of the negative impact that our shopping habits can have on the environment, we start to seek out ways to make a positive change. At first, it may be by refusing plastic bags and taking a reusable bag to the shops. And pretty soon we start to buy products in glass containers instead of plastic. We take our reusable fruit and veg bags with us whenever we go shopping and refuse single-use plastic. And before we know it, our green journey has led us to become zero waste shoppers.

“There is no such thing as ‘away’, when we throw anything away, it must go somewhere.”

Annie Leonard

Zero waste shops are places that sell loose products free from packaging as well as products that promote green living. Shops where you take your own reusable shopping bags and containers and buy exactly what you need, which means you use and waste less.

Over the past two years, quite a few of these shops have popped up across Cape Town. I have added a ‘Zero Waste Shops‘ section on my blog’s Directory and will be featuring each one.

“The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.”

Paulo Coelho

LIL waste free Grocer & Café

The LIL Grocer & Café in Glencairn which was created by Earth Warrior/ Artist Jade Khoury, will very soon become a one-stop-shop for zero shoppers. I first visited the shop in December, when I met Jade and listened to her vision for the shop. It’s only a few months later and on my recent visit, I could see it is becoming reality, and it is all thanks to a membership campaign and the ongoing support of the zero waste community. The shop boasts a section filled with locally sourced fresh organic fruit and vegetables as well as fresh artisan bread made by Cape Point Bakery. They recently added a dry goods section where you can buy grains, seeds, nuts, dried fruit, flours, pasta, coffee, teas, herbs spices, and superfood powders. They still plan to add products to the waste-free lifestyle section as well as a waste-free home & body products section.

“Living with less does not mean lack. It makes room for more. More time, more money available and more room for quality life experiences.”

Jade Khoury

The idea is to bring along your own reusable bags and containers but if you forget, they have a selection of clean jars in their pay-it-forward cupboard, which has been donated by customers. They also offer 100% compostable paper bags made from sustainable forestry which will cost you 50c and R1 depending on the size.

The vegan-friendly waste-free café offers a variety of dairy-free smoothies, fresh juices, toasties as well as baked goods, loads of which happen to be vegan. If you are planning on sitting down for a smoothie it will be served in a reusable jar with a reusable straw. When ordering be sure to specify sweetening the smoothie with either coconut sugar or dates as they also offer honey as a sweetener.

If you are stopping by for a take away drink, remembered to bring along your own reusable cup and you will get R2 off your purchase. But if you forget, you can get it in a compostable cup which will cost you an extra R2. And if you want to buy some baked goods, be sure to bring along your reusable container, as the items will be placed in a very cute newspaper pocket. We bought some vegan cookies and croissants, which was placed in one of these, but next time, I will definitely remember to take along my reusable containers.

waste free

The LIL Grocer & Café is also a venue of sorts, as they host quite a few events on a regular basis. From Make it/Mend it Mondays to Lil Talks, Book swop Sunday’s (every second Sunday) and Lil Workshops; their aim is not only to educate but also to inspire people to be more earth friendly.

I’d love to attend some of these events in the near future and will definitely be stopping at the LIL Grocer & Café regularly.  Have you been? What is your favourite thing about zero waste shops? Let me know in a comment below.

“The most environmentally friendly product, is the one you didn’t buy.”

Joshua Becker

Where are they?

The LIL Grocer & Café is located at 12-14 Glen Road in Glencairn, which is between Fish Hoek and Simons Town. They are open from Mondays to Saturdays from 7 am to 5 pm and on Sundays and Public Holidays, from 8 am to 3 pm.

Oh My Soul Cafe – Durban

by Sharné April 15, 2019
written by Sharné

On a recent trip to Durban, we stopped for lunch at the 100% vegan Oh My Soul Café, who recently won their legal case against fast-food giant, Chicken Licken.

“The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.”

Hippocrates

oh my… soul café

Oh My Soul Café is located in Durban and is a 100% vegan café that promotes living a cruelty-free life. Large vegan banners with the Oh My Soul Café logo draws your attention as you get closer to the café. Their logo consists of a blue mandala with a very cute flower headband wearing cow in the center. Below the mandala are the words Oh My Soul Café  with their slogan ‘be kind to every kind.’ Upcycled plastic bottle chickens and chicken ‘footprints’ lead you inside.

The café has an unexpected barn style shabby chic interior. As you enter you can’t ignore the large ‘this is just the Veganning’ blackboard, full of vegan quotes and info about the negative health, environmental and ethical aspects of factory farming. The rest of the walls are full of quotes like “in a world where you can be anything, be kind”, “kindness changes everything”, “be cool, not cruel” and “kindness is free sprinkle that stuff everywhere” There is no mistaking that the café promotes the vegan lifestyle which as the vegan society states “…is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”

The café seems to be a very popular spot as the tables starting filling up as we explored. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the café has a small shop section where they sell a mix of toys, decor and vegan products including vegan marshmallows. The glass fridge in the café boasts a delicious looking selection of vegan desserts whilst the vegan menu has a great selection of breakfasts, lunch items, waffles, shakes, smoothies as well as Vurgers. Their menu caters to all vegans as well as those who enjoy cruelty-free vegan meats. We were in the mood for something sweet and decided to try their waffles. I had a Mango Chia smoothie and the Dark Aero Fudge and Nice Cream waffle, whilst my boyfriend had a Triple Berry smoothie together with The Nutter and Nice Waffle. As always we tasted each other’s orders and can both say that everything was delicious.

“Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul.”

Pythagoras
oh my soul
oh my soul
oh my soul

oh my… legal case

Chicken Licken, the fast food chain that sells chicken to the non-vegan masses, have accused Oh My Soul Café of infringing on their trademark “Soul”. Chicken Licken use the word Soul often, especially the term ‘soul food’. After doing some research I discovered the term ‘soul food’ originated in the 1960’s, when Afro’s peeked in popularity, and refers to the typical foods such as fried chicken eaten by the African Americans of the Southern US. To me, that is very similar to the entire Chicken Licken ‘Soul Food’ concept.

Oh My Soul Café, on the other hand, is completely against animal cruelty, don’t sell animal products of any kind (100% Vegan), and use the word soul as a direct connection to the fact that all animals on this earth have souls, just like humans. Be kind to all kind is their slogan, because they believe that all animals, including chickens, cows, sheep, fish, and pigs, have the same right to live their lives as we humans do. It is so clear, once you enter their café that they aim to create awareness and make a difference in a horribly cruel world.

“If they breathe they live, if they live they feel, if they feel they love, if they love they are aware. If they are aware they have a soul.”

A.D. Williams

I was very happy to hear that Oh My Soul Café won the case, but Chicken Licken has since appealed the judge’s decision. They are still insisting that Oh My Soul Café remove all use of the word soul. Chicken Licken state that because the word soul is used in the name of a vegan café it is confusing their chicken eating non-vegan customers and harming their multi-million dollar brand. Say what? The two brands are literally on opposite ends of the ethical spectrum. There can and never will be any confusion between the two.

Chicken Licken claims that this ‘confusion’ has damaged their brand. I honestly don’t think that is possible. But I do know that people all over the world are becoming more aware of the negative health and environmental effects of animal products. And more and more people are making the connection between animal cruelty and the direct connection to the food on their plate. Because of this, there has been a massive increase in vegan sales all over the world, whilst meat and dairy sales have dropped. Many people, like me who use to eat chicken and other animal products, have changed their ways and opted to live a life where we stand up for what we believe is wrong, even if it means standing alone. The world is changing, and we won’t be standing alone anymore.

I stand with Oh My Soul Café. Do you?

“When I look into the eyes of an animal, I do not see an animal. I see a living being. I see a friend. I feel a soul.”

A.D. Williams

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market at Granger Bay

by Sharné April 14, 2019
written by Sharné

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market (OZCF) at Granger Bay has to be one of my favourite markets as it boasts a great variety of food, local produce, products and loads more.

ozcf-market

Market day essentials

The Market is a plastic-free environment so if you know you are heading to the market for the morning, don’t forget your reusable kit. My reusable kit consists of the following: shopping bags, fruit and veggie bags, dry goods bags (I’m hoping the market will start to stock #plasticfree dry goods) food containers, cutlery and my travel coffee mug.

The market is an undercover outdoor market which has inside and outside space and the floor of the entire market is covered in woodchips. If it’s a rainy day be sure to take a raincoat as you will get slightly wet when you enter the market and when you move in between the tents.

The market is also dog-friendly so you can bring the whole family. However, dogs are not allowed in the food tents.

Most of the traders use SnapScan, so if you don’t have the app on your phone then I suggest you download it beforehand and set up your account. I myself regularly use SnapScan at markets, restaurants and even for parking in town. If you would like to know more about SnapScan click here.

A little bit of everything

The market is split into zones, so if you are entering from the parking lot, to the left, you will find local products, antiques, plants, flowers and more. In the middle, you will find the deli tent which has some amazing vegan desserts, bread and other delicacies. The outdoor seating is on the right which consists of large tables where people from all over Cape Town, as well as abroad all sit together to enjoy the food, the atmosphere and each others company. Past the deli tent, is the fruit and veg tent and beyond that is the food tent.

Locally grown fruit and veg

As my aim is to shop plastic free, The OZCF Market is the perfect place for me to do my weekly fruit and veg shopping. The fruit and veg tent is located in the middle of the market and boasts a large variety of locally grown produce. It really is very simple, you grab a basket, load it with all your favourites and take it to the counter to be weighed. I usually pay with SnapScan but I think they also have card machines.

If you forgot your reusable bag, the market can provide you with a free cardboard box, or you can purchase a reusable and recyclable brown paper bag for R25 or buy reusable baskets from R200.

The food

At the far end of the market is the food tent which has quite a few vegan options. Don’t be surprised to find 100% vegan stalls as well as many other stalls that offer vegan options. You can expect vegan breakfast bowls, vegan burgers, vegan wraps and even vegan waffles. If you go to the market often, you can literally try a different vegan dish every time. There is also a great variety of drinks available from fresh juice, to kombucha to coffee (yes they do have dairy-free milk and you do have to pay extra for it)

Many of the traders offer biodegradable food packaging and utensils if you forget your reusable kit. But if you buy coffee and bring your own reusable mug, your coffee gets discounted by R5.

Local products

If your plan is to go to the market for some food, or local produce, I highly recommend you browse through the various stalls selling local products. I personally love to support local and often buy locally made products as gifts for my friends and family. You will find gorgeous jewellery, fashion, beauty and homeware products right at the OZCF Market.

When and Where?

The OZCF Market is located at Granger Bay Boulevard, next to the V&A Waterfront, and is held every Saturday from 08.15 to 2pm and every Sunday from 9am to 3pm. Entry is free, and you can enter the market from either The Granger Bay Parking Lot next door, or the 2nd entrance on Beach Road. You can enter ‘Oranjezicht City Farm Market” into google maps to find the location.

If you have been to the OZCF Market, please tell me all about it in a comment below. To see what other markets and festivals I have been to, have a look here. And click here, to see my post about the vegan popsicles I bought at the OZCF Market.

handmade giant vegan easter egg from my sugar

by Sharné April 13, 2019
written by Sharné

My Sugar have made 12 giant vegan easter eggs, that are available from today. Each easter egg is lovingly hand painted and hand filled with their amazing chocolate creations.

Vegan easter egg

Last year I bought one of the limited edition giant dark chocolate vegan easter eggs from from My Sugar. The outside of the giant dark chocolate hollow egg is beautifully decorated with glittery, colourful painted swirls and inside there are smaller eggs filled with delicious sticky orange, raspberry and dark chocolate ganache. A single giant egg, cost R250 each but is the perfect gift for a loved one, or for yourself. This year the hand painted design is said to be slightly different but will have the same eggs inside.

More vegan options

My Sugar also have other vegan chocolates for sale, so be sure to ask them which ones are vegan. And don’t be surprised if they are all sold out. I tried these amazing hazelnut espresso pods which are made from roasted hazelnut and espresso guanduja in a dark cholocate shell.

My Sugar

My Sugar is located at 77 Regent Road, Seapoint and are open on Saturday & Sunday from 10am to 8pm, and on Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 6:30pm. As there are only 12 vegan easter eggs I suggest you call them on 021 433 2335 before you head on over to Seapoint. Be sure to follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

Have you been to My Sugar? Or have you had a vegan easter egg from somewhere else? I’d love to hear from you in a comment below. To see more of the snacks & treats I have found, have a look here. If you’d like to see what else I have found browse my Directory. New products posted regularly.
