Vegan Face wash from Back 2 Nature

by Sharné August 7, 2019
written by Sharné

As part of my #zerowaste or more accurately #lowwaste green vegan journey I have made the switch to this all natural plastic free vegan face wash from Back 2 Nature that is packaged in a reusable glass jar.

vegan face wash

Why go natural?

Do you know that traditional face wash contains harmful synthetic chemicals that not only negatively effects the environment but also negatively effects our health. All you have to do is google the often unpronounceable ingredients on the back of the package.

Some of these chemicals are known skin irritants, cause respiratory distress, negatively effect the reproductive system, and some are even known carcinogens (cause cancer). The reality is that there is a long list of negative effects associated with these chemicals and the companies who use them are allowed to use them because the regulations on beauty product ingredients is not at all what it should be!

Once washed down the drain, many of these synthetic chemicals cause serious damage to the environment when they reach the rivers and oceans. The water itself as well as the plants, organisms and animals living in those bodies of water are all negatively affected by these often toxic chemicals!

Another factor to consider is that many face wash products on the market today, contain exfoliating beads made of harmful polyethylene micro plastics. The problem with these plastic beads is that they are so small that they can’t be removed from the waste water during the treatment processes. All these billions of pieces of micro plastics will end up in the rivers and oceans together with the harmful synthetic chemicals. Over time these micro plastic beads become even smaller, as plastic doesn’t biodegrade but rather breaks down into even smaller pieces. And these micro plastics become more toxic over time as they absorb harmful chemicals. I once watched a YouTube video about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where they mentioned that in some places in the ocean there is more micro plastics than plankton.

These plastic beads are so small that they are often consumed by tiny organisms as well as animals living in these bodies of water, like fish, which is then consumed by bigger animals or by humans. I read somewhere that we have many pieces of micro plastics inside us and that micro plastics can even be found in the air we breathe. Again it is not illegal for companies to use these micro plastic beads so they continue to use them. Sugar, salt, apricot kernels, coffee grinds and other biodegradable ingredients are often used as natural alternatives to plastic exfoliating beads.

As a conscious consumer I am very aware of these harmful effects as well as harmful effects of the packaging the often un-recyclable products comes in.  I only buy products containing natural ingredients, that is not tested on animals, contain no animal ingredients, is safe for me and for the environment. I also aim to buy products that come in no or reusable packaging, preferably glass.

Back 2 Nature

All Back 2 Nature’s products are handmade in Cape Town, and are natural, vegan, cruelty free and free from harmful chemicals. All their products have been approved by the Beauty Without Cruelty Association of South Africa (@bwcsa) , as well as the South African Vegan Society (@savegansociety) A small percentage of all profits go ‘back 2 nature’ to a local non-profit ocean conservation organization called I Am Water.

The base of this facewash is made with rooibos, kaolin clay and tea tree oil and all of the ingredient are from plants and quite a few are organic. Read more about it here. It is a lovely product and I highly recommend it!

Where to buy?

I bought mine from Shop Zero (@shopzero.sa), who have a physical shop in Woodstock as well as an online shop. You can also have a look here for more stockists.

Nutty vegan choc mint smoothie

by Sharné August 6, 2019
written by Sharné

This nutty vegan choc mint smoothie recipe, is made up of dairy free milk, fresh mint, chia seeds, cacao powder, hemp powder, nut butter, desiccated coconut and lastly, a frozen banana.

Nutty vegan choc mint smoothie

While summer is typically smoothie time, for me smoothies are a year round quick breakfast. Since buying a Nutribullet a few years ago, whipping up some vegan smoothies couldn’t be easier. Most of the time my vegan smoothies are an experiment as they consist of what I currently have in the kitchen. I often make nutty vegan choc mint smoothies as I almost always have all the ingredients for it in the kitchen.

Nutty vegan choc mint smoothie

All the smoothie ingredients (see recipe below) are added to my Nutribullet, which I let blend together, until I’m happy with the consistency. I sometimes wait up to a minute as I want to blend everything really well so that my smoothie is lump-free. Freezing the banana beforehand is important, as it makes the smoothie thicker and creamier. However for winter I don’t often add too many frozen fruits as the smoothies are then too cold!

My smoothies are always served in a glass jar and I add one of my reusable straws. Featured here is a copper straw which I bought at the Kalk Bay Co-Op, a small store in Kalk Bay that is packed full of local products.

Nutty vegan choc mint smoothie

[penci_recipe]

I’ve invested in a mint plant, so  I don’t buy the packaged kind anymore. And I buy the dessicated coconut, cacao powder and hemp powder package free from LIL Waste Free Grocer in Glencairn (see post here). I’m still on the lookout for package free chia seeds! I buy the nut butters in a reusable glass jar and often buy either Oh Mega or ButtaNutt. Here I used the OhMega Almond Butter. For dairy free milk I almost always use Almond Breeze Unsweetened Almond Milk which comes in a recyclable Tetra pack box. I do want to still try to make my own almond milk though.

And that is how easy it is to make a nutty vegan choc mint smoothie. What is your favourite smoothie to make, or to buy? Vegan Cork Fabric Handbag – Leefi

by Sharné August 5, 2019
written by Sharné

I recently bought myself a beautiful locally made Leefi vegan handbag which is made from cork fabric and baobab leather.

Leefi Haute Design

Cape Town based, Leefi, was created in 2015, by sisters Odette and Sulandé. They wanted to create a range of socially responsible accessories that was made by Cape Flats locals. Leefi have an amazing range of locally made vegan accessories for both men and women.  Their ranges include handbags, wallets, purses, belts, travel bags, toiletry bags, ties and travel bags.

vegan cork handbag

The Alyssa Cork Clutch

Leefi have a range of clutch bags made from their vegan baobab leather which comes in various colours (black, blue, dark brown, red brown, pink, tan and yellow) They also have one that is a combination of the tan baobab leather together with cork fabric which I absolutely love! The clutch is small (20 x 5 x 13cm) but easily fits, your keys, phone as well as coin purse. The ling baobab leather strap makes it perfect for markets, festivals and evenings out.

The Jula Coin Purse^

The Jula coin purse range colour options match those of The Alyssa Cork Clutch so you can mix it up or match it. It is the perfect item to keep your cash and cards together and can also be used as a mini (14 x 1 x 9cm) makeup bag or as a organiser for the loose small items in your handbag.

*Dislaimer: Leefi gifted me the Jula Coin Purse

vegan cork handbag

Why cork?

Growing up as a kid, I only knew of cork being used for pin boards. Today cork is widely used for making flooring, wall cladding, clothing, accessories, furniture, as well as home decor items.

Cork fabric is really amazing! Not only is it a natural vegan alternative to plastic fabrics and leather, it is also water repellent, stain resistant and scratch-proof. Leefi’s cork fabric is made from the bark of the local cork oak tree, many of which can be found all over Cape Town. Cork Oak trees are grown without irrigation and without the use of chemical herbicides or fertilizers.

According to Amorim, Cork trees over 25 years of age, are harvested every 9 years by stripping the bark from the tree, without damaging the trunk itself. Because the typical lifespan of a cork tree is approximately 200 years, the cork tree can be harvested around 17 times. During that time the bark will regrow smoother with each harvest.

Where to Buy?

You can buy a Leefi product directly from their online shop or from their stand at the Root 44 market in Stellenbosch.

Do you love cork as much as I do? Have you been to the Leefi online store? I’d love to hear from you in a comment below. If you’d like to see more accessories  I have found, have a look here. Bokashi bin – Earth Probiotic

by Sharné July 29, 2019
written by Sharné

Reduce your landfill waste and recycle your food waste by using a Earth Probiotic Bokashi bin together with Earth Bokashi bran.

Food Waste!

We all waste food, whether we have bought too much of something and it goes off before we use it all; or if we make too much food and have family members who refuse to eat leftovers. I recently read somewhere that in South Africa we waste about 10 million tonnes of food per year, almost half of which is fruit and veg.  Our yearly food waste amounts to about a third of the food that is produced. That means that billions of Rand’s worth of food is thrown in the bin, while there are millions of South Africans who go to bed hungry every night!

I’m not writing this to make you feel bad, I’m writing this to make you aware of the impact our actions have. I have been trying to reduce the amount of food waste I am responsible for. One way it to buy less. Because I buy packaging free fresh fruit and veg weekly, I can control the amount I buy of each item. I know I go through tomatoes quickly so I buy a lot, but I don’t always get to all the onions so I buy less. And instead of throwing the food waste I do created together with the off cuts, into the bin, I’ve invested in buying two Earth Probiotic Bokashi bins which turns the waste into compost and creates liquid fertiliser as well.

Why Compost?

We all know that fruit and vegetables are biodegradable. Which means that when placed in soil, with the help of microorganisms, light, water and oxygen, it starts to break down. This is called aerobic biodegration. But do you know what happens when your fruit, vegetables and other biodegradable kitchen and garden waste, which you sealed in a black bag, ends up in a landfill?

With very little dirt, oxygen and hardly any microorganisms the organic waste will start to slowly biodegrade anaerobically. When decomposition is anaerobic it leads to a production of methane, a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming and climate change. This is exactly why it is so important to compost your kitchen and garden organic waste.

Composting in itself is a controlled process. But if you have a compost heap and you don’t aerate it regularly, the biodegration will turn anaerobic, which will then produce methane.

bokashi bin

What is bokashi?

Bokashi composting is basically a pre-composting fermenting process which happens inside a sealed bin, that does not produce heat, CO2 or methane. The bin has a tap at the bottom, and a strainer which is there to separate the food waste from the liquid which is created during the fermenting process.

Earth Probiotic’s Earth Bokashi bran is made with indigenous South African microorganisms and contains a balanced mix of nitrogen and carbon rich material; which is added to the bin together with your food waste to accelerate the break down process. The sealed bin does not smell so you can keep it indoors or in your garage. It is recommended that you keep it out of direct sunlight.

How to use your bokashi bin?

To start using your Earth Probiotic Bokashi bin, you collect your biodegradable kitchen scraps (basically anything from a plant or an animal) into a container, which you can store in the fridge or freezer. I try to cut the scraps into smaller pieces and store mine in the freezer. Then weekly you open your bokashi bin, add the scraps, push them down slightly, and then sprinkle bokashi bran over the scraps. You keep doing this until your bin is full.

Then once it is full, you leave the bin sealed for 2-3 weeks, before adding the contents to your compost heap. At this stage, the food scraps still resemble food scraps and will continue to break down in your compost heap. The bokashi actually also accelerates the composting process.

You need to invest in 2 bins, because once your first bin is full you can start filling the second bin. And if you realise you generate more waste, after your second bin is full and before you have transferred the first bin’s contents to the compost , then it is suggested that you invest in a 3rd bin.

How to use your bokashi juice?

Bokashi juice, also called leachate; is basically a liquid that is generated from your kitchen scraps and accumulates at the bottom of your bokashi bin. During the 2-3 week process, once a week I take the bin, and put it on a counter so that I can open the tap, while holding a jar underneath to collect the bokashi juice.

Bokashi juice is mostly used as an extremely powerful liquid fertiliser, and because of its acidity you need to dilute it with water before using. It is recommended to use 1:300 for gardens and pot plants which means you add 1 part bokashi juice to 300 parts water. So 2ml can be added to 600ml water. And for lawns and veggies the ratio is 1:100 and for sensitive plants it is 1:1000.

You can also add the bokashi juice to your compost, which acts as a compost enhancer. And you can use the bokashi juice as a soil drench, to add minerals and nutrients to your existing soil. In both cases I would dilute it 1:100.

Undiluted, bokashi juice is also a great to unblock drain, that can help control odour and prevent algae build-up. And it also has the benefit of cleaning up our waterways.

bokashi bin

Where to buy?

Bokashi bins are now available at most nurseries. I bought mine from Shop Zero’s online shop and regularly by Bokashi bran from them as well, as they sell it in bulk, free from plastic packaging. If you buy it online, you get it in a brown paper bag, which you can reuse a few times, before eventually adding it to your recycling.

The Daily Goods Store

The Daily Goods Store has a variety of packaging free dry goods, earth friendly cleaning products, organic fruit and veg, zero waste lifestyle products and so much more! They have also recently added a book swap section where you can bring a book and take a book. They also offer a weekly Muizenberg only organic produce and grocery orders delivery service.

When I stop by, I bring along my own reusable bags and containers. Alternatively they have used jars for you to use for free or you can buy a new jar. Then they also offer paper bags which you can buy for 25c & 50c each, and they use that money to plant trees!

Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans. The most important thing is the indigenous people are not vindictive by nature.

DIY

diy general cleaner

by Sharné July 18, 2019
written by Sharné

I’ve started making my own DIY general cleaner and it’s so easy I thought I’d show you how, so you can too! It’s made with 3 basic ingredients, which you most probably already have in your kitchen, and it can replace most of your general cleaning products.

DIY general cleaner

Why go natural?

I used to have a ton of plastic bottle cleaning products at home, which mostly consisted of synthetic chemicals, which are harmful to us, our families (including our fur kids) as well as the environment. Then I switched to green cleaning products, which was a better alternative, but still generated a lot of packaging waste. I used natural versions for years, and only recently started to switch to waste free versions I could decant into a jar at my local zero waste store. And this year I wanted to take it a step further, and try make my own. It was so much easier than I thought it would be to make my own DIY general cleaner.

Vinegar has been used as an effective cleaning ingredient for a very long time. Citrus (oranges, lemon or lime) is a great deodoriser, so adding it to the vinegar removes the harsh vinegar smell. Citrus is also antibacterial. and vinegar and citrus are both great de-greasers, so combining them not only smells good but cleans really well. I first learnt about this DIY cleaning combo on Pinterest & Instagram and knew that I had to try it.

DIY general cleaner

The Process

I started making orange juice from scratch so I now have lots of orange peels that I end up adding to my compost. So one day I decided now was the time to try it, and added the orange peels to a jar, and threw in some vinegar. I popped it into the cupboard and left it there for about 3 weeks. And voila a DIY general cleaner

Once it was ready, it no longer smelled of vinegar but rather had a pleasant citrus smell. I took out the peels, which I added to my compost, and was left with a yellow thicker liquid. I then filled half of my amber spray bottle with the liquid and topped it up with water. Voila! As easy as that. The great thing about it is that I buy the oranges free from plastic, so there is no waste, and once my last vinegar bottle is done, I will buy vinegar by decanting it into a jar at the store. So this cleaner will truly be waste free!

I have fallen in love with the many uses for essential oils. For my second batch, to make this cleaner even more powerful I added tea tree oil, which is very effective against germs as well as mould and mildew. And for the latest one, which I am currently making, I added lavender, which is a great disinfectant.

Coco Cat Natural Cat Litter ^

by Sharné July 15, 2019
written by Sharné

Coco Cat recently gifted me 2 boxes of their all natural litter to try out.

Why use natural litter?

Did you know that synthetic litter contains harsh chemicals that is not only harmful to the environment, but also to your family including your feline kids. Natural litter on the other hand is environmentally friendly, free from harsh chemicals, compostable, biodegradable and safe for your family.

Coco Cat litter is made from coconut husk, a renewable resource which is very absorbent, great for odour control and can be composted.

My Experience

I love that Coco Cat litter is compostable, all natural and locally made. The product itself is lightweight and comes in a recyclable cardboard box. The litter is super soft on the kitty’s paws and they just loved using it. Compared to the natural litters on the market the price is not bad, and a box lasts about 1 and a half weeks with 3 cats.

There is one down side though, it is extremely messy. Because it is basically a fine powder, it ends up everywhere around the litter box. It does not track very far though, but the bathroom where the litter box is kept, what quite messy. I basically got into the habit of dusting the bathroom every day. Even though I had to clean more than usual, I would still highly recommend Coco Cat litter to someone looking for an all natural alternative.

Where to buy?

Coco Cat is available from Shop Zero, who have a physical store as well as Nude foods.

Are you using a natural litter? Have you tried Coco Cat? Let me know in the comments below.
