Zero Waste Kitchen

Zero Waste is all about reducing the amount of waste you are responsible for, reusing wherever possible and only using recycling and eco bricking as a last resort. I’ve been on a mission to turn my kitchen into a zero waste kitchen. One of the ways is by buying my pantry staples package free from the daily goods store by taking along my reusable glass jars. Spier Wine is going vegan

Spier is on a mission to make all their wines Vegan and they are the first winery in the world to receive the Control Union Vegan Standard certification. So far, four of their six ranges (Seaward, Creative Block, 21 Gables, and Frans K Smit) are certified Vegan.

Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest winefarms, with a focus on sustainable farming practices. The Spier farm is organically certified, as the fruit, vegetables and vines on the farm are all grown free from artificial fertiliser or pesticides. Spier also recycles their black- and grey-water, and 98% of their solid waste is recycled.

Veganism is a lifestyle motivated by one or more of the following reasons: health, environment (carbon footprint reduction), and ethics (preventing animal exploitation and suffering). When you consider Spier’s current practices, moving to vegan wines is a natural progression. And Spier wanted their customers to be assured that the wine really is vegan, by getting a Vegan Standard certification from the Control Union.

The Control Union is an international certification and inspection company. It has certified the Spier Vegan Wine, since the Control Union has inspected the wine making process from beginning to end, and their certification assures me that no animal products were used during the making of the wine!

To celebrate their recent Vegan Certification, Spier sent me a bottle of their Vegan 2019 Seaward Chardonnay and a bottle of their Vegan 2019 Creative Block 2 which is a 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Sémillon.

Many people assume (I did once too) that all wine is vegan as it is made from grapes. What people don’t know is that many wineries still use animal ingredients (casein, egg whites, gelatin, fish bladder protein, etc.) during the winemaking process, in order to make the wine clear and bright. Luckily for us Vegans, there are wineries like Spier, which have moved to vegan friendly alternatives instead, which do not alter the taste of the wine.

Where to buy?

You can buy Spier wine at most liquor stores, as well as at the Spier Winery in Stellenbosch, and on their website, where you can get 15% off if you join their wineclub. I’m planning on going for a wine tasting at the Spier Winery soon, so that I can try the rest of the vegan wines!

new vegan summer menu – the courtyard cafe

I was recently invited to attend the new vegan summer menu launch at The Courtyard Café and was blown away by Chef Michael Keating’s incredible creations!

The Courtyard Café

The Courtyard Café is one of my favourite eating out spots! I’ve been there quite a few times, and I have tried quite a few of their vegan options, including their amazing vegan burger (see blog post here). When I received my invitation to attend their new vegan summer menu launch I immediately RSVP’d, as I wouldn’t miss it for the world!

Chef Michael Keating has a obvious passion for food, and has become a master at creating unique vegan dishes. The Courtyard Café is very lucky to have him on the team. At The Courtyard Café they even make their own (awesome) bread, pasta, almond milk, hummus, pesto, salad dressing, etc. After the event we each got a goodie bag full of their products, so we could enjoy them at home.

The courses

When we arrived at the Courtyard Café, we were treated to champagne, various delicious hors d’oeuvres, as well as some delicious juices (green, red and orange). The most memorable were the crumbed mushrooms and the red beetroot juice. The 1st course included a trio of chilled soups: avocado gazpacho, borzcht, and butternut and orange; and 3 salads: quinoa, waldorf carpaccio, and panzanela. It was wonderful to taste the various flavours of soup – the avocado was my favourite. The salads were all wonderful, but the quinoa salad inspired me to try emulate it at home.

The second course consisted of pasta arribiata, the Chef’s stacked slider, and a lentil and aubergine moussaka. Each item was delicious and definitely something I would order again and again. For the last course, we were treated to an almond chai latte panna cotta, a chilled beetroot cashew cake, a dark chocolate brownie with banana ice cream, as well as brilliant millionaire’s shortbread. I’m not kidding when I say it was all mouthwateringly delicious!

Throughout the event the meals were paired with lovely Catherine Marshall Wines, which are also all vegan.

Where are they?

The Courtyard Café is literally in a courtyard which you enter through a passage on the ground floor between the Artvark gallery and The Kalk Bay theatre on Main Road. They are open from Monday to Sunday from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Look out for the A-frame café sign that is usually on the roadside.

sprouting kit – bakgat pottery

Have you ever sprouted beans, seeds and grains? I’ve been wanting to try it! Why? Sprouting is a great way to unlock and increase nutrients and makes seeds, nuts and grains more digestible. Sprouting only takes a few days and you can sprout year round right at home!

Many sprouted seeds can be eaten raw and from what I’ve read sprouted grains and beans are most often eaten cooked. Sprouts can be added into salads, soups, dips, stir-frys and even breads.

There are many ways to sprout and you can choose between using a jar, a tray, a fabric bag, or by using a sprouting kit. And once you have experimented with sprouting you can also try growing peashoots and other microgreens, which I’m also wanting to try.

My boyfriend bought me this Braeside ceramic bean sprouter and I’m excited to start sprouting. It’s made by a local company called Bakgat Pottery. Have a look on their website (contact page) to see their Western Cape stockists.

recycled plastic pegs from Increda-peg

These pegs are from recycled plastic by a local company called Increda-peg. Not only are they strong and durable, but they can also be used in many different ways, not just on the washing line!

Recycled plastic products

Currently, all over the world, most plastics sent for recycling does not actually get recycled! If we want the plastic to be recycled them we need to invest in items made of recycled plastic! Sure we should be trying to stop the demand for single-use plastic altogether but I’m specifically referring to all the used single-use plastic items that are already here and are currently polluting our environment! Those items should be recycled and made into new products!

From what I’ve read, it seems that often the price for virgin plastic is cheaper than recycled plastic so to keep costs down companies are buying virgin plastic to make their products. We need to increase the demand for products made from recycled plastic in order for virgin plastic to be used less. Plastic is after all made from materials found in nature (mostly oil and natural gas) and we now know that these materials are non-renewable resources so we should be using them sparingly!!!

about Increda-peg

Increda-peg is a small local family-owned business. Brett Potgieter, his wife Margie, and their son Tyne run the business. The Increda-peg was created by Brett. The Increda-peg is designed to be used in various ways, and it is made from 100% recycled plastic! This really is a great product, as I have recently started using the Increda-peg in interesting ways, one example is using it as a connection between my bra straps, so I could wear a top that usually exposes my straps. 🙂

My boyfriend bought these at a market while on a work trip in Johannesburg. The pegs (60 units) were packed in single-use plastic. 🙁 I really love that the Increda-peg is a multi-use reusable product made from recycled plastic. I just find it strange (and sad) that it is then packaged in single-use plastic, instead of a reusable fabric bag which you can hang on the line while putting up laundry. Increda-peg PLEASE consider changing to reusable packaging or at the very least to paper packaging.

The Increda-peg is available online on their website, as well as at markets in Johannesburg and in KZN. Be sure to have a look at their facebook and Instagram to see where they sell their products. If you do decide to buy some, please ask that they consider changing the packaging. We as consumers have the power to insist on positive change.

humphrey the whale from clever pixel

Meet Humphrey the whale. Humphrey isn’t an ordinary toy whale, he was specially hand made by Mariana in order to raise awareness about the plastic pollution in our oceans.

Plastic pollution in our oceans poses a very real threat to whales and dolphins as they are mistaking marine plastics for food.

According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation between 5 and 13 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year. Numerous dead whales and dolphins have washed ashore all over the world, with their stomachs full of plastics! We must act now!

So next time, you want to buy an item packaged in single-use plastic, think of Humphrey and all his friends in the ocean. And as Dory would say in whale language Thank Youuuuuuuu to all who are reducing their plastic waste!

I love this ‘be kind to every kind’ vegan vest, by Eco GemGem and wear it with pride.

Eco GemGem is a local company, based in Durban, who hand make awesome cruelty-free products that promote kinder living and they source their cotton in SA and print their clothing locally. I bought my 100% cotton Eco GemGem vegan vest on The Bespoke Artichoke’s vegan online shop a few months ago, and have worn it quite a few times since. It’s an awesome way to spread awareness and show the world that you care.

This vegan vest is available for both men and women. Sizes range from small, medium to large.

Where to buy?

You can get your vegan vest online at The Bespoke Artichoke, which is a vegan online shop that sells a wide range of vegan goodies including BWC & Leaping Bunny approved products as well as palm oil free eats. I first discovered them at the Vegan Goods Market and fell in love with the store. Follow them on Instagram & Facebook to see when they will be at the Vegan Goods Market, as you can place your order online and collect at the market.

You can also buy the vegan vest at Shop Zero, which is located at 403 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. Shop Zero is a zero waste, plastic-free lifestyle store with vegan pantry essentials and speciality foods. They are open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm & on Saturday from 9 am to 3:30 pm. sugarcane toilet paper from gudco

Gudco is a local company that makes Gudsheet 2ply and 1ply toilet paper from locally sourced sugarcane that is free from plastic packaging. Every purchase helps Gudco provide Toilets to South African underprivileged schools and crèches, and Toilet Paper to those in need.

Many Schools in SA don’t have toilets!

Mandela once said that our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation. When you realise that thousands of schools in South Africa don’t have modern day toilets, and many don’t even have toilet paper, you realise that we as a country are failing our children. Proper sanitation in schools is a human right. I want to do something to help, and you can too!!!

Gudco Toilet Paper

Gudco is a socially and environmentally conscious company. Each toilet roll is hand wrapped in eco-friendly paper, which is then packaged in paper boxes instead of single use plastic as most traditional toilet paper is. Selling the toilet paper rolls in bulk (48 rolls per bulk) reduces the packaging as well as lowers the carbon footprint of the product.

The toilet paper is 100% biodegradable, BPA free, contains no chlorine, acids, inks or dyes. It is made from 60% sugarcane fibre and 40% FSC approved wood pulp. Sugarcane is a quick growing grass that is often used instead of trees in order to combat deforestation. Sugarcane paper is made from bagasse which is essentially the left over pulp after sugarcane has been crushed to extract the juice which is used to make sugar. Wood pulp is a sustainable material because it is a renewable source, albeit only if properly managed. In order to halt deforestation, The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ensures that FSC certified forests are responsibly managed, and only harvested at such a rate that the forest itself can manage to reproduce.

Gudsheet 2-Ply purchases helps build Toilets for underprivileged schools & crèches, while the 1-Ply provides Toilet Paper to those in need. I’ve been using Gudco’s 2-Ply for a while now and I can honestly say that I will never go back to traditional toiletpaper.
