Red lentil and chickpea pasta from happy earth people

I bought this Happy Earth People red lentil and chickpea fusilli pasta online at Shop Zero.

The pasta and the packaging

The Happy Earth People Chickpea fusilli is made from nothing but 100% pure chickpeas, and the Red Lentil fusilli is made from nothing but 100% red lentils. Both are organically grown (non-certified). It was delivered in compostable paper bags. I then transfer the pasta to reused glass jars in my #zerowaste pantry.

I love cooking with this pasta as it cooks in 6 & 8 minutes, is vegan, all-natural, high in protein, and gluten-free! Oh, I almost forgot to mention it tastes great!

This pasta is available for purchase (in carboard boxes and larger paper bags) from the Happy Earth People online shop, as well as from many other stockists, listed on their website.

vegan banana bread recipe

This vegan banana bread recipe is mainly made up of blueberries, Alpro chocolate soya milk, banana, and lastly, frozen blueberries. I baked it in an oven-safe glass bowl and it came out beautifully!

vegan fruity chocolate smoothie recipe

If you are looking for a vegan chocolate smoothie that tastes like a chocolate milkshake then this one is for you!

Ingredients:

1 mango, sliced
2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
a handful of frozen strawberries
1 tbsp @phytopro thrive chocolate
2 cups of @alpro soya milk
1 tbsp @healthconnectionwholefoods cacao nibs
1 tbsp coconut flakes

Instructions:

1. Cut mango into pieces, and scoop out the pomegranate seeds. Compost the fruit scraps.
2. Add the cacao nibs, chocolate powder, and fruit to the Nutribullet together with the non-dairy milk. I used about a cup and half of milk but you can use more if you like.
3. Blend and pour into a jar. I poured the smoothie into a consol jar and added a stainless steel reusable smoothie straw.

@ratilekalakala is a gorgeous Cape Town-based, vegan, and sustainability activist. She is a unicorn loving model, who loves changing her hair colour (the pink is my favourite) You might have spotted giant posters of her at @_yde_ rocking a blond look! I’m totally obsessed with her #plasticpollution photo series! Have a look here!

Vegan Ice Cream from Unframed Ice Cream

I’m an interior designer so I appreciate a cleverly put-together interior! Unframed Ice Cream has an amazing new store and I love it! Oh, and did I forget to mention they have delicious vegan ice cream!

Unframed Ice Cream

Unframed is a Cape Town-based artisanal Ice Cream Company that makes dairy ice cream, vegan ice creams, and sorbet. I love that they have quite a few vegan flavours and so far the two I thoroughly enjoyed were the vegan turmeric latte and vegan vanilla. I highly recommend you try them. This unframed shop is in Woodstock, at the Woodstock Quarter, 187 Sir Lowry Road! I’m totally obsessed with the simplicity of the interior design and I love the herringbone tiles! Unframed also has another location at 45C Kloof Street in Cape Town.

My fiancée bought me this #zerowaste ginger cleansing bar from HempLove. It’s 100% vegan, is paraben and sulfate-free and is made with ginger extract and moringa oil. It’s specially made for sensitive skin and is ideal for washing your face and neck.

HempLove

HempLove is a South African slow fashion brand that makes 100% organic hemp and cotton blend garments. They mostly use natural plant-derived dyes and their packaging is plastic-free and recyclable. They also have a skin superfoods range which includes serums, CBD oils, sanitizers as well as this amazing cleansing bar. I love that they are truly passionate about sustainability and it shows in everything they do.

The non-profit Veganuary started in 2014, and ever since it has inspired people globally to try the vegan lifestyle for the month of January, or even permanently. Veganuary has also inspired stores, restaurants and brands all over the world to launch vegan products during January, and then throughout the year! This has greatly helped the vegan lifestyle become more accessible.

If you are interested in taking the pledge, you can sign up on the Veganuary website (click here) where they provide you with easy meal plans, recipes, as well as helpful tips.

Why go vegan?

People tend to gravitate towards the vegan lifestyle for one or more of the following reasons: ethical, environmental, and/or health. Whatever the reason, the fact that more and more people from all over the world are trying this lifesyle is amazing!

Why it’s great to switch to reusables

We all know that single use items are bad for the environment and create excessive waste. Making one small change can have such a big impact! Take this giveaway as an example. If you went grocery shopping twice a week, with enough groceries to fill one shopping bag, one single reusable shopping bag can in one year prevent approx 730 single use plastic bags from ending up in a landill, the ocean or from having to be recycled after a single use. The reusable shopping bags are handmade with wax printed cotton fabric and come in a variety of patterns. I have bought quite a few for myself, and as gifts. They are available in standard tote size, and a heavy duty shopper version.

Tali’s reusable face rounds are hand-crochetted with bamboo yarn by locals in order to promote job-creation and community upliftment. The face round packaging is made from left-over fabric from their reusable fruit and veggie bags. There are 4 x colourful reusable bamboo face rounds in each bag. These reusable face rounds are a great replacement for single use cotton rounds, cotton wool and even wet wipes.

Vegan Cork Sneakers from Reefer Shoes

I splurged and bought myself a pair of locally made vegan cork sneakers from Reefer Shoes and I’m totally in love!

Corks

Reefer Shoes is a local small business that makes these awesome vegan cork sneakers. You can buy them in natural, black, green, sunflower, and navy. The cork used is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. The FSC ensures that FSC certified forests are responsibly managed, and only harvested at such a rate that the forest itself can manage to reproduce.

a little bit about cork

I love cork so much that I have quite a few items made from cork, including a lamp, handbag, planter, and now my new sneakers! Not only does natural cork look great, but it is also a sustainable material. Cork Oak trees are locally grown all around Cape Town. It can be grown without irrigation and without the use of chemical herbicides or fertilizers. Cork is water repellent, stain-resistant and scratch-proof.

According to Amorim, Cork trees over 25 years of age, are harvested every 9 years by stripping the bark from the tree, without damaging the trunk itself. Because the typical lifespan of a cork tree is approximately 200 years, the cork tree can be harvested around 17 times.

CO2 & Trees

CO2 is the main gas responsible for trapping heat in our atmosphere. This trapped heat, means that the globe is warming and our climate is changing in many ways (extreme weather events, rising seas, decline of wildlife populations and habitats, etc.). The biggest contributers to CO2 in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. Other contributers are deforestation, land clearing (usually for agriculture) and the degradation of soils.

Trees are known climate change fighters as they are great at converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen. What makes cork oak trees so special is that they are also able to capture and store CO2 each time bark is harvested and regrown. This is called “carbon fixing”, which helps combat the high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.
