A few months ago, these Sapmok vegan vellies were gifted to me. #thankyou I really love them, and have been wearing them so much that I just had to add them to my blog!
Sapmok’s vegan journey
Sapmok is a Pretoria-based small business that was started by Werner Winterboer in 2015. Werner only made leather vellies until 2018 when his vellies were going to be used in a photoshoot. Both the models were vegan so they don’t wear animal products. The photographer asked Werner if he could make vegan versions and instead of refusing, which I think most people would have, he said sure! And so the first Sapmok vegan vellies were born. Each pair is hand made from scratch by talented Sapmok cobblers. The vegan vellies were originally made from cotton, and have since been changed to hemp, which is one of the most sustainable fabrics available. The plant is known as a carbon-negative raw material as it absorbs more carbon than it produces. It grows very fast, requires less land to grow than cotton, does not need much watering, requires very few pesticides, and does not require any herbicides!
“We’d like Sapmok to become a leading SA brand of environmentally-friendly products with conservation as our main goal. The vegan vellies are a turning point for us as they show what can happen if we focus our creativity on the environment. Keeping in mind, we have a long way to go. If we can convert one person at a time, and hopefully in time, it will result in more change,”Werner Winterboer
Where to buy?
Sapmok’s vegan vellies series includes this light blue (to me it really looks more like a light grey) as well as a light pink version! You can buy the vegan vellies online on the Sapmok website.
